Wow! A spectacular conclusion to the series. This book calmly wraps up the loose ends, expands our knowledge of the world, and ties the distant past to the present day. Moon has created an incredibly real world with lots of fully worked out detail.

A wonderful collection of Victorian era short stories, displaying rebellion and defiance of societal norms in all ways. After reading this collection I have several new authors whose books I want to try out.

A Natural History of Dragons
by
Marie Brennan

, February 23, 2013
This memoir, written by the redoubtable Lady Trent is an excellent read. Detailing her childhood and early adulthood through her first dragon research expedition, it brings to life the societies and cultures in her European-esque world, as well as providing insight into early dragon research. This fascinating species will be sure to catch your interest with its strange characteristics, abilities, and behaviors.

Julie 01 Julie Of The Wolves
by

I returned to this childhood favorite of mine in honor of Banned Books Week, and found it a much more complex story than I remembered. Though the writing is obviously aimed at children, the ideas and information are for anyone. Julie runs away to escape an uncomfortable home situation, intending to go to San Fransisco where her pen pal lives. Instead, she gets lost on the tundra. There she finds and befriends a wolf pack for survival. Then, as winter comes she must decide whether to follow the way of the eskimo or accept the world of the white men.

Second Opinion

It was really interesting to read a book written from the point of view of a woman with Asperger's Syndrome. At first I hardly noticed the difference -- it was more in the way other people reacted to the things she said. But as the book progressed, it was more and more clear just how different her way of thinking was. The suspense and mystery kept me eagerly turning the pages until the very end.

Deerhaven Pines
by
Diana McRae

Delightfully creepy and mysterious, light on the romance. Though I'm still bemused by the ending, this book sure did keep me intrigued all the way through. McRae deftly uses language as she jumps back and forth between times -- but at first the jumps were confusing; there weren't enough indicators of when the action was taking place.

Empress of the World

A beautiful book, and hopefully very relevant to today's teens, especially the gifted ones. My favorite line from the book: "With an elegant hand gesture, she indicates the other tables full of kids, most of whom look like they always sit by themselves at their regular school." Nicola's narration is interspersed with excerpts from her notes, which fit in seamlessly, and yet allow Ryan to write with two different voices.

Frontier Magic 01 Thirteenth Child
by
Patricia C Wrede

, August 09, 2012
In an alternate, but very recognizable, frontier America, Eff is born the unlucky 13th child in her family. At least, she's unlucky according to Avrupan (European) magic. When her family moves out to the true western frontier, she learns about Aphrikan and Hijero-Cathayan (African and Eastern) magic, where 13 isn't unlucky at all.

Song For Summer
by
Eva Ibbotson

, August 07, 2012
A beautiful love story by one of my favorite authors. Designed for a somewhat older audience than many of Ibbotson's other books, this one nonetheless has all of the elements one would expect -- strong and complete characters and unusual outlooks on life all wrapped up in a distinctive writing style. The book is set as WWII breaks out, which is a setting that I've recently been seeking out and enjoying in my reading. It's wonderful to get a small dose of history with my fiction.

Three Wise Cats
by
Harold Konstantelos

, April 05, 2012
It may have been a slightly odd choice to read a few days before Easter, but this book was still a delight. The simple (but not simplistic) writing style is full of the joy and wonder of Christ's birth. The addition of the three cats, who are all faced with temptations before eventually finding their places in the world, keeps this story from being a static tale, and provides many more topics for thought or discussion than just the birth of Jesus.

Blood Spirits
by
Sherwood Smith

, January 29, 2012
Wow! This is a stunning sequel to Coronets and Steel. Full of mystery, intrigue, romance, magic, and humor, this book will keep you guessing until the last page. Smith's use of language is delightful and entertaining, especially in the contrast between modern LA colloquialisms and old-fashioned Dobrenican customs. Protagonist Kim's sense of the absurd threads throughout the book, and reminds you that this is just good fun; don't take it too seriously!

Shattering
by
Karen Healey
Sarah MacQueen
, January 22, 2012
This young adult suspense/murder mystery is well worth the read at any age! Healey specializes in creating characters who are diverse in all ways, yet completely ordinary. These are not your picture-perfect, problem free storybook kids, and they are all the more real for it. Of course, the story is beautifully crafted as well, and keeps you jumping at every turn. I don't want to give a bit of it away; I hope you get the chance to enjoy it as much as I did.

The Magicians Assistant

I picked this book up on a whim this summer because the cover was intriguing, and the blurb in the front cover sounded interesting. I absolutely fell in love with the writing style, and the introspective, almost dreamy quality to the story. The book had exactly the ending I was hoping for, and I enjoyed it from start to finish. This is definitely a book I would read again and enjoy just as much the second time.
