Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Lincoln's Preparation for Greatness: The Illinois Legislative Years
by
Paul Simon

Endless books have been written about Lincoln’s life and Presidency, but the majority of his time in elected office was spent in the Illinois State Legislature. Former Illinois Senator Paul Simon examines Lincoln’s state legislative career in exhaustive detail. So much so that some chapters are best read to cure sleepless nights. But those who finish it will be rewarded with profound new insights into Lincoln’s career and character. It covers Lincoln’s role in moving the state Capital to Springfield, his strong support for the disastrous program of internal improvements, his relationship with abolitionists like the Lovejoy’s, his performance as a legislative leader, why he jumped out the window during one session, and his career-long rivalry with Stephen Douglas. In the process you’ll learn much about Illinois’ early political history that shaped what Lincoln and the state would eventually become. If Lincoln ran for President today his is state legislative career would be examined as closely as journalists and the Clinton campaign have studied Obama’s record in the same body. Instead, we had to wait for Paul Simon to give that period of Lincoln’s life the treatment it deserves. I wouldn’t recommend it for casual readers studying Lincoln for the first time but finishing this one is well worth the effort.

Our Brand Is Crisis (Widescreen)
by
Rachel Boynton

I love working on political campaigns so I thought this movie about James Carville's political consulting firm running a Presidential election in Bolivia would be fun to watch. I was expecting an international version of The War Room but ended up getting an education in both Latin American and U.S. politics. American political consultants try to bring back Goni, the 90's centrist, pro-free trade candidate against his more leftist challengers. "Our Brand is Crisis" refers to their central campaign message, which they use in addition to ugly attacks meant to drive up the negative ratings of their rivals. I learned much about how free trade is viewed in Latin America but I've also thought back to this movie often during the Democratic Primary. I see many of the tactics in the movie being used now by the Hillary Clinton campaign. In some ways, it's easier to see how destructive something is when you see it happening to someone else. This is easily one of my favorite documentaries of the last five years.
