Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Lucy is a normal teenager...or is she? What is normal anyway? Gonzales presents a unique story addressing ethical and philosophical questions surrounding western culture and what it means to be "human". This is a great book for book clubs and classrooms. I couldn't put this book down and Lucy's story has stayed with me since I finished it. Now if only my friends would read it...

I was lost in this book from the first page, and before I knew it the sun was setting on my day at the beach. I can imagine a facility holding all the books ever written ... and read.

Grayson
by

How can one have the endurance to swim continuously in the ocean for three hours, and then spend another several hours swimming beside a baby whale to help find its mother? Lynne Cox, that's who. The descriptions of her experience giving of herself to assist a baby whale places the reader right there with her in the cool coastal waters, experiencing the spiritual connections between herself and the sea creatures all around her. Cox's writing, and Grayson, will stay with with me for a long time.

Dreamers Of The Day
by

This is a novel to savor. . .from the invitation to hear the narrator's story through the well paced historical but personal descriptions and slight twist at the end, Mary Doria Russell manages to convey historical knowledge in a highly personal and engaging manner. I was sorry to suddenly find myself on the last page.

Your Inner Fish: A Journey Into the 3.5-Billion-Year History of the Human Body
by
Neil Shubin
deep thinker
, March 18, 2008
In a highly accessible and engaging manner Dr. Shubin manages to take us back millions of years to show how various parts of the human anatomy developed from, of all things, fish. The stories of his time in the field searching for fossils only builds to the excitement of his discovery of Tiktaalik and evolutionary connections he is able to make. The illustrations by Kalliopi Monoyios are amazing and add to the well developed arguments presented by Shubin. This book makes you think - I loved it, and look forward to more books by Dr. Shubin.
