Rehearsal
by
Eleanor Catton

Eleanor Catton suddenly became the literary darling of the season when her second novel,'The Luminaries', won the coveted Man Booker Prize this year, making her both the youngest winner and with the longest novel in the prize's history. But her first novel, 'The Rehearsal' should have tipped off readers that she was someone for whom to watch out. In a sui generis style, Catton illuminates in gorgeous prose full of wit, insight and intelligence, the story of a scandal in a New Zealand high school, when a young girl has a consensual affair with her jazz band teacher. Simultaneously, a young boy enters a rigorous acting program with some unusual methodology, and finds himself creating a performance piece based on the scandal. Unexpected, humorous and head-scratching by turns, Catton brilliantly intrigue the reader right up to the last sentence.

Fault in Our Stars

John Green

When I tell people that: A. this is a YA book, and B. it concerns two teenagers dying of terminal cancer, I get these odd looks like "Why would I ever want to read something like THAT!?" While it IS very sad, (tears WILL be shed), it is also hilariously funny and, more important, life afirming. John Green is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors - is works truly transcend the YA label, and it is a shame that more adults aren't reading him. I MADE my 90 year old mother read this and she agreed it was one of the best books she has ever read.

Suitable Boy

Even though the book looks daunting at almost 1500 pages, I whizzed through it and literally couldn't put it down - it is the kind of familial saga (actually four interconnected families) that is rarely attempted these days. Beginning in the years just prior to India's Independence and following to the years immediately after, it covers a huge amount of both historical and emotional territory, without ever getting dry or didactic. I am eagerly awaiting Seth's sequel, which is slated for 2013.

I LOVE the video, but this kind of smacks of crass commercialism...and most of the charm of the video (i.e., the voice of Marcel) is lost in print. I think a much better idea would have been to do another (ot two or three) more videos....

Long listed for the Booker Prize, this is both very funny and very sad... although long, the pages fly by and the characters are unforgettable.
