Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Depletion & Abundance Life on the New Home Front
by
Sharon Astyk

, January 02, 2012
A voice of reason as we sail even further into difficult waters where most lives will be buffeted by the winds of change brought by the collapse of the economy, the food crises both domestic and international, the depletion of resources, and resistant powers-that-be to do what it takes to minimize the damage. Sharon Astyk is imminently qualified to throw light on the problems that we will face, but even better she tells it like it is - and tells you how you can grab the tiller, trim the sails and prepare families like yours and mine, both young and old, little and large, to get our sea legs. She aims to help us build stronger homes, learn to provide our basic food needs, harness good health, prepare children to live in a less hospitable world, and to live life to a greater depth. What's so compelling is that you know when you read her, that if you would just do the homework, you'd get it all. There's just one delicious caveat: for the triple punch, you should read this with 'A Nation Of Farmers: Defeating the Food Crisis on American Soil' and 'Independence Days: A Guide to Sustainable Food Storage and Preservation' - also by Astyk. She shows you how to do it/or where to get the help, and keeps it real.

P.S. This should actually have 4 stars - I liked it enough to put it on my Powells Wish List. Hint hint - I'm looking for a second hand copy

Not Just Beans

This is a really useful book for cooking on a budget - for stretching your dollar. Simple to read, and easy to understand recipes, and the wide-toothed binding lets the book lay flat on the counter - making it much easier to read when your hands are full! It also includes a section on making non-edible, and edible gifts such as quick mixes in a jar. Not a beans and veggie book only. Plenty of bread and meat recipes too. It would be a great 'second' cookbook for those who've learned the difference between a frying pan and a saucepan. :-)
