Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Vanished Kingdoms the Rise & Fall of States & Nations
by
Norman Davies
michael.monarchi
, August 14, 2012
Vanished Kingdoms tells fascinting stories about European nation-states that have disappeared. Not all were actually kingdoms. Some states vanished only to reappear, perhaps in a different form (Lithuania-Poland, Montenegro) while others are actually still evolving (Ireland), having shed their former structure for something new and different. One remarkable story is a nation-state that existed for only one day - the Replublic of Carpatho-Ukraine on March 15, 1939. The stories range from ancient Britain (the Kingdom of Alt Clud) to the most modern (and perhaps most astonishing) disappearance: the USSR. Some of these states left a large mark on history, while others are almost completely unknown, yet all involve human enterprise and human stories.

Time for Trumpets The Untold Story of the Battle of the Bulge
by
Charles B Macdonald

An excellent history of a major battle in WW II - fair and balanced, it gave me a deeper understanding of what really happened and overturned some long-held erroneous beliefs with regard to events and reactions. On top of that, it incorporates much personal experience and first-hand accounts, making it eminently readable and fast-paced.

War & Peace & War The Life Cycles of Imperial Nations
by
Peter Turchin
michael.monarchi
, June 03, 2008
Mr. Turchin has a mildly interesting thesis on how and why imperial nations developed where they did, based on social cohesion in response to something he calls the metaethnic frontier, rather than the collective self-interest of individuals. I do admire his strenous efforts to buttress his case, using everything from demographics to calculus. A little heavy on the scientific underpinnings at time, but still there were historical nuggets to be mined from his examples and case studies.
