Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Blood Telegram: Nixon, Kissinger and a Forgotten Genocide
by
Gary Jonathan Bass
EdwardjK
, December 13, 2014
The "Blood Telegram" clearly describes how the U.S. looked the other way when Pakistan attacked the Bengalis, in the pursuit of other foreign policy objectives. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people died as a result. However, the author misses the connection to present-day U.S. politics. The parallels between Pakistan in the 1970's and Syria & Libya today are striking, and the author missed an opportunity to describe how Barack Obama is also looking the other way in these countries in pursuit of similar foreign policy objectives.

Ready Player One

"Ready Player One" is a very quick read. I completed the entire book in two days. The story is fast-paced and very engaging. There are a few parts where I thought the author got tired of writing and breezed through the story. But overall, I thought the story is well-written. Look for this to be in the movies in a year or so - much like "Q&A".

This has to be the strangest book I have ever read. I read about 20 pages a day and found myself half-way through the book and still not understanding the storyline. Since I invested so much time in it, I kept going until reaching the end. Ok, it ended and I am still not sure I get it. After finishing the book a few days ago, I still have no feeling about it. If someone asked me what I thought about the book, all I can say is "I read it", but I still have no idea what I read.

Reflections Of A Wine Merchant
by
Neal I Rosenthal
EdwardjK
, August 18, 2008
I picked up this book thinking I was going to learn something about he wine business. Instead I was exposed to a bunch of nonsence. For example, Mr. Rosenthal tasted a wine and described it as, "It left its stain inside me". You gotta be kidding? Nuddy, you should have stayed in the legal business. Bad, bad, bad.

Teapot Dome Scandal How Big Oil Bought the Harding White House & Tried to Steal the Country
by
Laton Mccartney
EdwardjK
, July 25, 2008
Laton McCartney provides an entertaining history of the Teapot Dome scandal. Written in a light style, the book is a page-turner that provides a thoughtful history of the players involved, what they did to steal from the public and its aftermath. I would not call McCartney's research "scholarly", but it is thorough. This is a great book if you want to understand the history of Teapot Dome.
