Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Harvard Psychedelic Club How Timothy Leary Ram Dass Huston Smith & Andrew Weil Killed the Fifties & Ushered in a New Age for America
by
Don Lattin

"The Harvard Psychedelic Club: How Timothy Leary, Ram Dass, Huston Smith, and Andrew Weil Killed the Fifties and Ushered in a New Age for America" by Don Lattin, is a great look at the spark which ignited the mind-expanding 60's and 70's. This review includes colorful snapshots of events and personalities which I've long tried to place within the puzzle of those seminal times. From Harvard to Berkley, this readable expose is a trip!

View From The Ground
by
Martha Gellhorn
James Morgan
, September 11, 2010
Beauty, brains and heart...Martha Gellhorn has won my admiration in this retrospective of her writings over sixty-some years, covering two-thirds of the twentieth century. Her adventuresome nature, starting in her twenties to eighty-plus, leads her to discover and then to reveal the human condition as she finds it around the world, horrific and inspirational, resultant of follies of bureaucracy or tragedies of war. She writes with with compassion in elegant and descriptive prose, revealing herself in the process. Her insights into life as lived, shaped by politics and human nature, are preamble to where we discover ourselves today. "The View From The Ground", should be required and supplementary reading for secondary and college students in government, U.S. and world history, sociology, psychology, literature and/or journalism.

Harry Potter 07 & The Deathly Hallows
by
J.K. Rowling
James Morgan
, January 03, 2010
This seventh installment of Harry Potter's coming of age tale in a world fraught with obstacles and danger speaks to our imaginations with more gravitas than the preceding works, coming off the darkness of HBP. We who were entranced from the beginning by J K Rowling's masterful creation of the magical world shadowing our muggle existence learned valuable life lessons, including that even wizards are mortal, as are we, and misjudgement can lead to death. Not every mishap can be vanished with the wave of a wand. It is a somber summary, but we who have made the journey to this point, so many of us, have surely grown up with an increased awareness of our personal responsibility to ourselves, friends and families. Well done, indeed, Harry Potter!
