Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Lonesome Dove

Do you like "Westerns"? Me, neither! Frankly, the illustration of cowboys and cattle on the front of this book would never tempt me to read: quite the opposite, in fact. However, as so many mediocre novels highlight through contrast, there's nothing like a good story, expertly told. THIS is the book, folks. I've worked in numerous bookstores and libraries and Lonesome Dove was always my answer to the question, "I want to read something I won't be able to put down. What do you recommend?" Even if you have seen the (excellent!) mini-series that was based on this book, there is plenty that the makers of the series had to leave out. And if you last saw the mini-series when it originally aired on tv, no doubt you've forgotten a lot of the story. PS: Beware of the sequel (Streets of Loredo). The two prequels (Dead Man's Walk; Comanche Moon), however, are satisfactory to those of us who simply cannot let go. However, they necessarily pale in comparison to the original.

Wheres Mom Now That I Need Her Surviving Away from Home

I found this little gem at a used bookstore and really consider it to be a great graduation gift, or - better yet - the perfect book to give someone who is moving into an apartment for the first time. I covers everything from an extensive list of emergency food substitutions to simple recipes to first aid to how to sort the laundry to how to know if you have just a common cold or something that needs to be investigated further - and tons of other stuff: truly, stuff that you would ask your mom (and still can, of course, it's just that at 2am she's probably in bed :) Also, it is the only book I've ever found that can provide a substitution for egg - although, of course, I'm referring to egg for use in baking, not for, say, an omelette... This book predates the Big Internet Revolution - probably most of the stuff you could look up on the Internet nowadays, but you would have to invest a lot of time in that and frankly, it's just nice to have a book in hand with which to look up this very practical advice and information. I also like the spiral-bound format: very convenient!
