Art in the Light of Conscience: Eight Essays on Poetry
by
Marina Tsvetaeva
Romayne
, August 04, 2012
Tsvetaeva's playful, soulful, and illuminating discussion of the nature of art and the role of the artist is a must read. Read it and then, come November, look for the new translation of her work by poets Ilya Kaminsky and Jean Valentine, _Dark Elderberry Branch_.

History of Love
by
Nicole Krauss

, January 02, 2011
As soon as I finished the book, I wanted to begin again. Leaving Leopold Gursky behind was almost as difficult for me as it was for him to let go of his dear Alma. And her namesake, Alma Singer? A combination of McCuller's Mick Kelly and Lee's Scout Finch. A delicious read!

Ive Heard the Vultures Singing Field Notes on Poetry Illness & Nature
by
Lucia Perillo
Romayne
, October 14, 2007
Lucia Perillo's frank and unsentimental explorations of her experience with multiple sclerosis and as a writer is a great relief to anyone who lives with an illness or handicap of any kind--be it physical, social, or being just plain different--and who continues to wish to be human in all its glorious facets despite the pressure to be noble.
