Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Julie & Julia 365 Days 524 Recipes 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen
by
Julie Powell

, June 24, 2006
One of my all-time favorite memoirs. [a]Julie Powell [/a]is fresh, funny and so real you come away feeling as if she's a beloved childhood friend (or wishing she was). You don't even have to be a foodie to appreciate her completely passionate dedication to her deeply eccentric quest--and her brilliant make-work Project's ability to propel her out of 9/11-induced depression and into the limelight. Powell's a true writer, and Julie and Julia is so much more than the mere blog-compilation (brilliant as her blog was--even my mother loved it!) it might have been. (And her long-suffering husband, Eric, deserves an award as well.)

Still Life With Chickens Starting Over in a House by the Sea
by
Catherin Goldhammer
ennasnosrap
, June 24, 2006
Anyone who loves the process of transformation will appreciate [a]Catherine Goldhammer[/a]'s extreme makeover of her life and home as she struggles through the passage from upscale married life in "Hearts-are-Cold" Mass. to divorce in a downtrodden cottage by the sea a few miles--but light years--away at what will become Dragonfly Farm. Six chickens, like tiny feathered buddhas, originally purchased to appease her angry 12-year-old daughter, make all the difference in this deceptively straightforward memoir. Goldhammer writes simply and beautifully, and if she insists her life isn't perfect, this book is.
