Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Constellation of Vital Phenomena

The words in this book read like poetry: sentences I just wanted to repeat for their beauty. Despite the gorgeousness of the prose, the story is dismal and gruesome, and achingly sad. It takes place in the early 21st century in Chechnya, focusing on residents of a small village just trying to live their life, but haunted by the struggle between the rebels and the Russian Feds. Innocent people are disappeared. A young, talented surgeon is reduced to expertly suturing patients with dental floss. A poorly-trained physician paints portraits of villagers who have been killed and hangs them from doors and trees, a young girl loses her whole family and is hunted by the Feds. I recommend this book based on the excellent writing.

This is a perfect book for summer: engrossing enough to keep you rooted, but simple enough that you won't forget what happened when you put it down to take a dip in the pool or a sip of your cool drink. The story uses that current style of combining narrative, text messages, Facebook posts, and shifting points of view, which I like. I saw this as a story of love between a hardworking professional single mother and her teenage daughter, but that's not all...
