Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Thin Woman

Author Dorothy Cannell introduces an entertaining group of characters, some related, some not, in this amusing mystery. The action is set in an old English mansion in need of serious cleaning, with that work becoming part of the plot. The ending is pleasingly unpredictable.

The 4 Hour Body

Ok, I confess, I haven't read "The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman" by Timothy Ferriss - yet. But with a title that promises so much with a human investment of so little, it's now at the top of my better read it list. I'm especially intrigued by the concept of becoming superhuman.

Thin Woman

Men won't like this book; women will find it charming. When an overweight single woman has to appear with a date at a gathering of her eccentric relatives, she rents an escort. Her uncle dies, bequeathing his dilapidated estate to the supposedly engaged couple with the stipulation that she lose weight, he write a book, and they clean up the place and find its treasure or forfeit the inheritance. People turn out to be not who they seem and several acts of sabotage leave the couple wondering who they can trust. The story is set in England which adds to its appeal. It's hard to imagine an equivalent situation happening in the US. For me it was quite the page turner, but I am a romantic at heart.

Virgin Heat

When several members of a dysfunctional mob family mix it up in Key West with the tourists and various gay men, expect a good read. Shames knows his characters well. He treats them all with great respect and avoids cliched stereotypes. Several different mysteries are solved as the family members come to a greater understanding.

Six Word Memoirs on Love & Heartbreak By Writers Famous & Obscure

Funny, sad, poignant, full of regret, hopeful - many possible reactions to the human experience of love are represented here, each written in just six words. I found "Married by Elvis. Divorced by Friday." to be a telling commentary on our times.

Company Man
by
Joseph Finder

I wanted to like this book, really I did. Joseph Finder had been sending me e-mail newsletters for ages, entreating me to read his books and offering opportunities to win them. Heck, we've never met and he even sent me a Christmas card! But "Company Man" did not thrill me. While Finder has an excellent command of the English language and its idiosyncracies, I could not relate to the characters and I did not like the story. The plot was trite and the ending predictable. And the book was just too darn long. Setting it in a factory was clever, but instead of talking about the actual manufacturing, this story focused on the financial end of things. Only a CPA could truly love that plot line. But someone, many someones, must have loved this book, as it was a best seller. I guess that's what kept me reading to the end, but when I was done, I felt my time had been wasted. I signed off from Joseph's e-zine and I don't expect a card this year.
