Oh Bury Me Not

This story takes place in eastern OR, in the high desert of Harney and Malheur counties. I loved the description of the country having camped out there often and seen the isolated ranches. I was disappointed that I was able to spot the culprit early in the novel, but the end twist was interesting.

Seasons Of Death

This story takes place in Idaho and involves a 40 year old disappearance. The characters are great hardy folks and I didn't catch who the killer was until the end. The description of the countryside was good and the ending showed that sometimes justice is best served by just leaving stuff alone.

Wake Up Darlin Corey

This was a fight between an environmentalist and corporate interests that results in the death of an appealing character. Description of the kites on the coast was great as was the not so nice weather. This one had a large cast of characters and I did not know who the villain was until the end. The ending ploy used by Conan to flush out the killer was chilling and showed how the worst in human nature can be brought out for the sake of greed.

This story takes place in the eastern part of OR in the high desert, Harney and Malheur counties. I love the description of the country, having camped there many times and seen the isolated ranches out there. It showed Conan Flagg in a different kind of environment and was a good story, however I was disappointed that I was able to spot the culprit too soon. The twist at the end was good.

Men At Arms Discworld 15
by
Terry Pratchett

This is a funny one, with its usual poking fun at our world through the absurdities of Disc world. Corporal Carrot, who is six feet tall at least and is a dwarf, is the kind of character you just love and he has a huge secret, that I am not going to spoil by telling. But he is amazing in the way he can handle all the squabbling peoples of the biggest city on disc world and his great attitude about people. Very enjoyable.

King Of The Mountain

This is a good Oregon thriller, all about a highly dysfunctional family with a lodge up near Mt. Hood. It keeps you guessing and there is a tense feeling throughout. There are no scenes at the beach in this novel, but the description of the scenery is always fun because the places are well known to most of us. After reading about the patriarch of this family, most of us will have a better feeling about our own family, even if it is less than perfect.

Peyton Place

This book, published in 1956, was a sensation at the time, and I never read it, thinking it probably had very little to offer. My daughter had it and I picked it up and was amazed at how well written it was and how interesting the characters were. The author uses a kind of scene approach where a landscape is described and someone walks into the scene and then you learn all about that person. There is a kind of "Greek chorus" in the form of 4 old men who sit on a bench outside the court house on main street, reminiscing and commenting on everything and moves the story along and gives you background. It is rather tame by today's standards. I enjoyed it.
