This was a fascinating novel of historical fiction, set in a time and place that was new to me (17th century Amsterdam). The author did an excellent job of bringing that time and place alive. She had me turning page after page wondering what's going to happen next. She developed some interesting, although strange, characters. The feeling of eerieness, a sense of something looming, the unknown, the coldness all bring you into this story. Highly recommended!

I couldn't put this book down! It's the story of two women, one present-day from London, the other in the past in the deserts of the Sahara. The story alternates back and forth between their stories, as Lizzy, the modern woman, searches for the meaning to a mysterious amulet her archaeologist father leaves for her after his death. I was amazed by the amount of research the author had to do to write this book - yet it was a rich personal story with a real mystery that made this book one of my favorites! I know it was a good read when I look up from the book and have to re-orient myself to where I am. I can't wait to read more by this wonderful author.

I have always been a Stephen King fan, except for the really gruesome few that I started and put down. This book kept me reading from the first words on, and although there are a few gruesome parts and some ripe language, it was engaging and a great thrill ride to the end. As usual, I was in awe of his way with characterization and his ability to forge a novel that you can't put down. Highly recommended!

Wow, what a great book, one that I hated to end but will leave lasting memories in me. It's the story of a feisty young woman who follows her new husband to the Civil War, disguising herself as a fellow soldier. The book was so well-researched (based on a real woman, among many women who did the same thing) and the characters and events were so real, I felt like I was there. I highly recommend this to others, especially lovers of historical fiction, as I am.
