A very readable overview of the snake pits of yore. And non-snake pits. But if you have a friend or relative diagnosed with mental illness, be prepared to be turned on your head. You will learn some things new and encouraging about treatment for mental illness.

I have kept Carla's self-published 1977 edition close to hand for 30 years. It is a great book that has guided me through many wonderful experiments in country living. This year all 3 of my grown children will get a copy of "Carla Emery" for Christmas.
