Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Before the Fall

Wooowee, this one’s a scorcher, not for sheer action, but as a wonderful page-turner/what’s next type of novel. It starts with a small jet crash and goes forward and backward in time, advancing the story and giving background. I really enjoyed learning more about what came before and what’s next. It has a contemporary artist, movers and shakers, their families at its core, and its up-to-the-minute send up of media monsters made it all the more timely. Read it with gusto.

Dear Thief

This is an exquisitely written novel in the form of a (very) long letter to a dear and intimate friend. As the letter unveils itself, we learn that they've shared much of their lives, possibly too much, though the author/letter writer doesn't necessarily come to that conclusion. The story and the letter are about so much more than their relationship; it's about parenthood, aging, friendship, relationships, life itself and so much more. Elegantly written, the novel is a gem to behold.

Thomas Murphy

A wonderfully astute internal monologue novel in which we are inside the thoughts of the New York City based poet, as he reviews his life, questions (and has questioned) his mental facilities, ponders his future, and is just a general all-around engaging curmudgeon. I can't remember the last time that I wanted to re-read a book immediately upon completion. With Thomas Murphy, I did.

Nothing But You Love Stories from the New Yorker

This is a superb collection of stories by a great array of writers, telling tales of love, loss, life, all that stuff that we feel and hear and think and want to feel and think. It's a terrific anthology to pick up when you need a lift, a break, an escape or merely a great story or two (or more) to get you through the day.
