Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

First Aid Companion For Dogs & Cats

If there is a dog or cat in your home, someday you will encounter a situation in which you'll wonder, "Is this a medical emergency? Can I wait to call the vet?" The answers are in this book. Searching by symptom or condition you will find the practical advice you need. The book covers whether a situation is life-threatening, serious, or something you can deal with on your own. It advises pet owners on care they can provide, what they should watch for, and what to expect if a visit to the vet is required, as well as what follow-up care should take place. Have you ever wondered whether an over-the-counter medication is safe for your pet? The answers are here, with proper dosages and very clear warnings about which medications intended for humans are potentially fatal for dogs or cats. All of this important information is imparted clearly, without condescension or the cutesy language that plagues some pet care manuals. If you own only one book on dog or cat health, this should be the one. This is the book I give to my friends when they adopt pets of their own, and I have a copy packed in my Go Bag along with our family's other emergency essentials.

The Beautiful Mystery: Chief Inspector Gamache 8
by

Once again, Louise Penny has created a novel that is about so much more than a mystery--unless you are talking about the mysteries of the human heart. Inspector Gamache and the rest of the characters that inhabit the Three Pines novels are excellent companions on the journey through these stories. Join them to uncover the beautiful mystery at the heart of Louise Penny's most recent work of art.

Love Walked In

This is the book I have been recommending to friends and family members since the moment I finished it. I waited until then because I wanted to be certain that something so beautifully written, so charming, tender, and funny could sustain its excellence until the very end. And it did! This is a lovely book, with characters you'll wish you knew, and by the end of the book you'll feel as if you do. At which point I have outstanding news for you--there is a sequel, equally lovely.
