Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. A Working Stiff's Manifesto: A Memoir of Thirty Jobs I Quit, Nine That Fired Me, and Three I Can't Remember

I adored this book. I read it while I was recovering from 2 broken wrists and was still able to visit the wonderful Prendergast Library in Jamestown, N.Y. Jamestown has had economic problems for a long time, and I felt the edge of struggle looking for work. There are wonderful people who live in this city, but it was the library that saved me. I had read Ben Cheever's book on working, can't remember the title, and then one day, all bright and sassy, A Working Stiff sat on the new shelf or the bio shelf or some shelf, and I took it home. I loved it. I laughed, felt saddened, understood. The writing was delightful, and I think in today's day and age, where everyone would like to call themselves "a working stiff" this is a must read. Tally ho, and chuckles and fortitude to all who read this review and the book A Working Stiff!

Clara The Early Years The Story Of The
by
Margo Kaufman

In our days of the planet going lurch, and the concept "bullying" creeps into the bone marrow of politicans, pundits, pubescent adolescents, there's another "P" on the horizon which will enchant your soul - that is if you like Pugs. Pug, a warm bodied black pug of bratty personality is revealed in Clara, Her Early Years, and every wag of her tail, every recalcitrant decision on her part is fascinating as Margo Kaufman, an incredibly funny writer, details her enchanting life in which she is a writer, and hold on to your horses, brings her pug dog to her office every day. My idea of a dream job is to wear any kind of socks I want, to write/teach writing, and to have a buddy pug along. Margo Kaufman used to write in the LA Times of Duke and Clara and whatever pug was with her at the moment. It was hard for me, the reader, to sift out, "Was Duke a Dog"? Duke was her husband. They lived in Venice, a haven for the eclectic; they loved pugs, and Ms. Kaufman wrote of adopting a boy named Nicholas from Russia. I think she also had an aside of battling breast cancer. I was electrified. Not only was Clara, her black pug, my invisible best friend, I had a son named Nicholas, and I later lived in Russia for a three year period - find Without A Net: A Sojourn in Russia on Amazon or visit sorrygnat.wordpress.com. She died a few years back, and I am still sad about this loss. Blessings and travel'in mercies on Ms. Kaufman as she transits the other worlds of God. She gave me laughter, love and time with everything I hold dear. I only hope Duke and their Nicholas are thriving, and that they are still walking Pugs in Venice!
