Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Proud Tower A Portrait of the World Before the War 1890 1914
by
Barbara W Tuchman

In the 19th Century, the Anarchist Proudhon proclaimed "Property is theft!" Anarchists killed many heads of state, including a Czar of Russia and U.S. President William McKinley. Today, Libertarians proclaim that "Taxation is theft!" and people driven mad by right-wing propaganda insist on carrying guns everywhere and take shots at "liberals" and their institutions. Between the two stands the Great War, World War I, whose 100th anniversary is only 3 years away. I want more people to read this story of the culture that started that war and was swept away by it, so we can avoid a similar catastrophe in our own.

God & The Gods Myths Of The Bible

This is an excellent book-by-book examination of the Old and New Testaments, giving the origins of the mythologies therein. It helped me formulate my own conviction that all religions are pastiches, stuck together from bits and pieces of what came before. Many of the contradictions are explained by these multiple origins. Why, for instance, are there two creation stories in Genesis? They come from the "Elohist" and "Yahwist" stories that seem contradictory when attributed to one consistent divinity, but which make sense when you realize they are different deities the authors of the books attempted to incorporate and combine as their beliefs changed over time. Religions evolve -- who'd a thunk it?
