Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Horus Rising Warhammer Horus Hersey 01

A surprisingly good introduction to the story of the Horus Heresy, thick with deep characters and deeper, darker plots. A familiarity with the Warhammer 40,000 world is helpful, but not required, so this book would be good for military sci-fi fans in general. I say surprisingly because Dan Abnett hs a mixed reputation among some readers- this is my first read of one of his books. He comes from a background of comics and light fiction, so this daring and detailed book is a welcome break from this reputation.

False Gods Warhammer Horus Heresy 02

An excellent read for those who enjoy the Warhammer 40,000 universe, as well as those who enjoy military sci-fi in general. Builds on the good start of the series ("Horus Rising" by Dan Abnett). The twists and turns of the plot, as well as the excellent descriptions and deep characters really drag you into the tragedy of the greater story arc.
