Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Artisan Vegan Cheese From Everyday to Gourmet

A Frenchman is eating the Garlic Chive Cream Cheese and says, "It's good! You can't beat that!" A Frenchman! Seriously, I have only made the above, and the Chipotle Cheese Sauce, but both were great successes. I am moving on to the ones that take longer and the ones that have to age, but I'm feeling very excited by this. It's different than all the other vegan cheese recipes as they require culturing (most try to fake this with flavouring, like lemon). The book is easy to understand and very well-written.

This is my favourite book of last year. I read it twice...once from the library, and again when I got this copy from Powells. Beautiful, lyrical, musical, hopeful, painful, and laugh-out-loud funny. Don't miss this one.

This is one of my favourite contemporary YAs. I've read it twice from the library and plan to buy it next time I'm at Powell's. I can't really put my finger on why I love this book so much, but I think maybe it's because it feels so honest. And it's funny, too.

Easily my favourite adult novel of the year (I mostly read Young Adult because that's what I write). Funny, subtle and overall just a great read. Everyone I've told about it who read it loved it too.

One of my favourite books of the year. And now an NBA finalist. Don't miss this one. Especially if you're like me and a bit squeamish about the tougher subjects...it's handled beautifully and it's a wonderful book.
