Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. No More Bull The Mad Cowboy Targets Americas Worst Enemy Our Diet
by
Howard F Lyman

, January 01, 2007
This book should be required reading for everybody. Written by a Texas cattle farmer who denounced meat at age 50, he gives both the inside story of the inhumane treatments of farm animals, the view from the slaughterhouses and the questionable health of the animals we eat AND provides us with our own shaky health statistics. Written in easy-to-understand layman's terms, he encourages us to test the vegetarian and vegan waters. The back of the book is a treasure trove of easy-to-follow, unintimidating recipes from the best vegan and vegetarian chefs.

Thunderstruck
by
Erik Larson

As riveting as his last book, The Devil in the White City, Larson weaves 2 stories expertly through his book, the advent of the wireless telegraph and the rush to perfect it and bring it to the masses, juxtaposed against the tangled life of one Dr. Crippen, and the chase to hunt him down after the remains of his wife was discovered under his basement floor. Absolutely enchanting.

Deadwood Stories Of The Black Hills
by
David Milch

, October 29, 2006
This book is a loving tribute to the popular HBO television show. Almost put together in an artful 'scrapbook format,' it is chock full of anecdotes, photos, sidebars, stories, although strictly for the fan. Creator David Milch takes us on the journey of the creation of this adaptation of our unique history, the settling of illegal land in the Black Hills of South Dakota when gold was discovered in 1874. The stars of the show - Ian McShane as Al Swearengen, Molly Parker as Alma Garrett, Robin Weigart as Calamity Jane, etc. - give their own unique slant as to the their character. 'Antiqued' photos portray the stars of the show as the characters they play, and many memorable scenes are recreated in pictures throughout the book. It is an artful extension of the television performance, and bonus, a delightful desk reference or coffee table entertainment.
