Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Joseph Anton A Memoir
by
Salman Rushdie
Marina Antropow Cramer
, January 01, 2013
As honest an account of the fatwa years as we are likely to get. Told in Rushdie's wry, sophisticated style, this is an erudite, unsparing memoir by one of our most distinguished living writers.

Catherine the Great Portrait of a Woman
by
Massie, Robert K.
Marina Antropow Cramer
, January 01, 2012
A grand and fitting companion to Massie's monumental Peter the Great; gives an enticing look at the making of a monarch. Catherine's history, rising from her relatively low status as the daughter of a minor prince to one of the greatest rulers of a vast land, makes for absorbing reading.

Travels in Siberia
by
Ian Frazier
Marina Antropow Cramer
, January 26, 2011
An illuminating view of one of the least known and most misunderstood places on earth. Frazier's account of his five trips to the Russian north is rich with history, full of personal anecdotes and stitched with a sly humor that portrays the inscrutable, occasionally irritating, sometimes infuriating Russians without ridicule or malice. Thoroughly enjoyable armchair travel; good, good reading.

Childrens Book
by
A S Byatt
Marina Antropow Cramer
, January 01, 2011
A children's book author composes a book of stories for each of her own sons and daughters, with unexpectedly devastating consequences. Set in the British countryside, deceptively innocent in its bucolic woods and gardens and turbulent seaside, the story moves eloquently through the lives of one family and the people who, caught in a web of very ordinary interactions with them, find themselves changed in ways no one could have predicted. Rich, complex, unforgettable.
