Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

In the Garden of Beasts Love Terror & an American Family in Hitlers Berlin
by
Larson, Erik
DeeLamb
, January 01, 2012
I feel this is better than Erik Larson's earlier works. He writes history by reviewing letters, diaries, government reports, and commentaries of the time to amalgamate a narrative that reads like fiction. The only difference from fiction is that we know how this actual story ends with Hitler's ascension to power. The evolution of American policy in the face of the circumstances is very educational and awakens thoughts about recent foreign affairs.

It has been months since I read The Help, but I can still chuckle to myself when I hear those women's voices in my head.

Price of Stones Building a School for My Village
by
Twesigye Jackson Kaguri
DeeLamb
, December 01, 2010
I heard Twesigye Kaguri speak at a local church this past weekend. I bought the book thinking that it would be a nice gesture. I was more enthralled than when I read Three Cups of Tea. The anecdotes about growing up in Uganda and the events that shaped his character are very engaging. The school, water system, health care, seed distribution, and community organizing are a true inspiration. I had not expected good writing in this genre and this is very good writing.

Tattoos On The Heart
by
Gregory Boyle
DeeLamb
, May 10, 2010
Father Boyle is a man who lives compassion. I spent Mother's Day reading his book and reflecting on the mothers of gang members who have screamed and wailed after he has told them that their son has been killed. He has been riding his bicycle and walking through the most dangerous part of Los Angeles for more than 20 years to minister to dangerous gang members and to convince them of the goodness in their own hearts. I think of myself as an open minded, caring individual. Tattoos on the Heart exposes me for what I am: an elitist, a snob, and a moron. He also convinces me that it is within my heart to be better.

Help
by
Kathryn Stockett
DeeLamb
, January 17, 2010
The story of Jackson, Mississippi in the early 1960's is told through the voices of three women: two Black maids and an Ole Miss journalism graduate who failed to catch a husband in college. I want to hear more from those voices. I would like to know that Minnie and Aibileen saw more positive fruits of their labors as the civil rights movement progressed. I'd like to know how Miss Skeeter's career developed after writing the Miss Myrna column with cleaning tips for the local paper.

Historian
by
Elizabeth Kostova

This is the best book I read last year, and possibly the best of the decade. A friend loaned me his copy. I've since had to buy my own so that I could pass it on to my sister and friends. I've tried to wait patiently for the second novel from Kostova with the hope it will stand up to The Historian.

Granite Kiss Traditions & Techniques of Building New England Stone Walls
by
Kevin Gardner
DeeLamb
, October 01, 2009
It really does work. I built my dry stacked terrace wall in Sonora, California based on this book as a guide. And yes, I did receive some "granite kisses" on my fingers and toes by dropping rocks in unintended places. It would have been a pleasure to read this book even if I were not pursuing my own construction.

This book is true to the Barefoot goal of teaching about a global society. Young children will relate to the simple tale with the universal theme of sharing.
