Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Piercing the Veil

When I started reading this book, little did I know it would cost me countless hours of sleep, not because of nightmares, but rather the book was so good, I couldn't stop reading. A real page-turner, I found myself burning the midnight oil, in order to finish it. Like a magnet, the author's graphic detail pulls you into the story, until you are one with the character, emersed in their surroundings, taking their breath, moving as they move. Wentz' broad linguistic capabilities, coupled with his vast historical and military knowledge, lay the groundwork for an incredible adventure story, dappled with moments of humor and romance, and leave you to wonder where fiction ends and real-life chronicles begin. An awe-inspiring adventure that makes one look within one's self, reflecting on those that came before us, contemplating the purpose of our being, Wentz will have you asking questions that need to be asked and answered. This is more than a military novel, this is an illuminating guide to seeking, identifying, acknowledging, and accepting our mission in life in our quest to preserve the future for those that will follow.
