Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Mouse Guard The Black Axe
by
David Petersen

Oh David Petersen, your art makes me sing! Well done, Mr. Peterson - my only regret is it sure takes a long time for one of these books to come out! How I enjoy the world of Mouse Guard! The Ferret king - beautifully dangerous! This wonderful story, going back to before the first Mouse Guard story, tells the history of the wielder of the Black Axe. The lovely boats - especially the turtle shell boat! And the wonderful adventure packed world - this is not Redwall. (Although, if you ever enjoyed a tale of Redwall, you will like these books!)

Night Circus

This book is amazing on so many levels. It has been quite some time since a book so grabbed me that I finished it and then simply started over again, knowing it still had secrets to share with me. The story of the circus, which appears with no notice and is only open at night, and the intertwined tales of Celia and Marco; the rivalry of their respective teachers, the beauty and magic of the illusions - it's incredible! And you want to know what happens - every page leaping into your head trailing red streamers; yet at the same time, you want to take your time, savoring every beautiful, well crafted sentence. Don't be surprised if you decide to just read it again, immediately.

Painted Alive: The Fine Art Bodypainting of Craig Tracy
by
Craig Tracy

Craig Tracy body paints like no other body painter I've ever encountered. His work is more than a painted body, more than a work on canvas, more even than a simple combination of the two. He approaches every concept, every model and situation uniquely, and the attention he pays to details shows in the brilliant and beautiful work that results. I don't know any other way to describe this artist and his work - beautiful and haunting, and often, with no clear definition to the body being painted. If you have an interest in art, or body painting, or simply enjoy a beautiful image

Big Cat Studio
by
Bhagavan Antle

I met Doc Antle back in the 80's when he was first starting out - he's an incredible voice for conservation in the 21st century and this is another wonderful book of photos of his preservation's big cats. They serve as ambassadors, making the creature and it's plight in nature real to people in a way reading about them or watching video can not do. As you hold a living breathing baby tiger, you connect. Sometimes I hear people talk about how wrong it is to make ambassadors out of the big cats - how they should all live in the wild. Where exactly is this wild? At the start of the 20th century there were 100,000 wild tigers, and now there are 4,000, with more poached and threatened every day. To survive we must have preserves, and to save the tiger is to save ourselves. All that being said - this is a nice affordable book of beautiful big cat photos. Enjoy!

Bhagavan Antle

, November 29, 2012
Beautiful cats, fantastic photography and important information about the state of the 'wild' and the things required to actually preserve and save tigers (and all the great cats) from extinction and obliteration. Save tigers, and save ourselves! The perfect gift for anyone interested in 21st century conservation, photography or cats!!
