Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse

Erdrich drew me into the minds of her characters several books back, so I couldn't contain my excitement when I found out that she gave us all of the stories again from the perspective of Father Damien Modeste. All the pieces of the puzzle fall together perfectly, and we're left with all the right questions answered and still aching for her next installment in the stories of this community. As always, I stand in awe of Erdrich's ability to create such intricate lives and thoughts of such unique characters.

Painted Drum

I was completely pulled into this piece of Erdrich's puzzle about the families she started telling us about in _Love Medicine_. I love hearing the different perspectives of the story, and finding out how so many lives can be so very, very intertwined. I was thrilled, too, to hear more about Fleur's early life. Definitely a must read of the decade.

Tales Of Burning Love
by
Louise Erdrich

I started reading this simply because I adore Erdrich's work, and I was pleasantly surprised when I recognized names from her other novels. Erdrich again provides details on the characters' she's encouraged us to love and despise -- while still somehow spinning a whole new story with new personalities within the familiar community.

I was completely riveted by Erdrich's story of the tribe in her series -- I was constantly trying to figure out how her characters were intertwined and connected, and she always found a way to surprise me with her intricate details.

Bingo Palace

Louise Erdrich

Erdrich pulled me into her world through _Love Medicine_ and _The Beet Queen_, and the deeper I read into the characters' lives in _The Bingo Palace_, the more difficult it was to put the book down. Erdrich brilliantly tells a story we can all relate to, in a very unique way.

Time Travelers Wife
by
Audrey Niffenegger
ReadingMathTeacher
, August 23, 2009
This is not your everyday romance novel. By telling us about Henry and Clare's love, their life, their normal joys and struggles as well as those instigated by Henry's genetic disorder that pulls him through time, Niffenegger fosters our own love affair with the couple. She helps us connect with them in ways only expert writers do -- we are able to see that despite our differences, we share so much.

On Chesil Beach
by
Ian McEwan
ReadingMathTeacher
, July 20, 2009
I picked up this novel because I adore McEwan's _Atonement_; this novel certainly proved itself as well. The time changes that McEwan intertwines throughout the book kept me reading for hours, just wondering how the couple's fateful wedding night might end. The novel simultaneously gives us glimpses into the private lives and thoughts of its characters and insight to England in the early twentieth century. The end was superb -- and in true McEwan fashion, not at all the way I expected it to be.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
by
Stephen Chbosky
ReadingMathTeacher
, July 19, 2009
As I read this book, I could envision myself in many similar situations, could remember my own unexplainable emotions, during adolescence . Granted, many of Charlie's experiences were nothing like my own, but that doesn't seem to matter when you're wrapped up in the pages of his intriguing story. All that matters is that we can relate to him, and through that we learn and remember more about ourselves.

Atonement
by
Ian McEwan
ReadingMathTeacher
, July 15, 2009
I encourage everyone to read this -- especially before watching the movie (although it was tremendous as well). This book makes us think about how much of our reality is simply what we perceive, and how much of it we fabricate for one reason or another. Whether you're a literature student diving into the novel's metafiction or a reader looking for a captivating story that will make you want to name children or pets after the characters, this book is a must-read.

White Teeth

Zadie Smith

I thoroughly enjoyed both Smith's descriptions of multi-cultural England and her in-depth character development. The culture was something I'd never learned about in a history class, and I was so intrigued by the characters that I couldn't put the book down!

Proof A Play
by
David Auburn
ReadingMathTeacher
, July 01, 2009
This play brings the characters to life -- even if you're only reading it and not seeing it performed. Auburn keeps the audience wondering what exactly is going on -- just as Catherine is wondering throughout the play. She deals with mourning the loss of her father, finding her own identity, developing her own loves, and forging her own destiny, regardless of anyone else's perception of it. An excellent and moving read!

Wit A Play
by
Margaret Edson
ReadingMathTeacher
, July 01, 2009
This moving play pulls at the heartstrings of anyone who has loved someone who is terminally ill. Although it is difficult to address the emotions tied to such experiences, it somehow encourages emotional healing in the process. Having read the script and seen the production, I can honestly say I connected with Vivian more than most characters I have read.

The characters of this novel pull the reader in like no other -- and it fits perfectly within the entire _Love Medicine_ series. Look on to _Tales of Burning Love_ for more on these characters.

Speak
by
Laurie Halse Anderson
ReadingMathTeacher

For an author to so eloquently and accurately tell us what's going on inside a teenage girl's head is amazing enough...to do it and address a strikingly painful and difficult topic as Anderson does is miraculous. Anyone who works with teenagers -- and all teenagers -- should to read this.
