Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Little Heathens Hard Times & High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression

I loved this no-nonsense memoir, and I have multiple pages dog-earred so I can easily find the recipes the author was so kind to include. Reading this book felt like having tea with a friend of my grandmother.

City of Scoundrels The Twelve Days of Disaster That Gave Birth to Modern Chicago
by
Gary Krist

This is not excellent literature, but I recommend this book for the excellent research the author put into the topic. This is not a book of historical fiction. You hear about about 1919 Chicago in the words of the people who lived there & then. Not all of them were scoundrels, some were even worse. But, the author presents them to you, in their own words. I loved that.

White Tiger Uk

This is not a nice, feel-good book. Warning: It contains adult themes. And it is written in such a compelling manner that I could not put it down even when the narrator really disgusted me. Months after finishing this book, I am still thinking about it, especially when India & China are in the news. Caution: reading this book could make you think.

Any author who puts out books my middle-school aged son begs me to buy for him to read deserves my vote for best read of the year.

Your Mythic Journey: Finding Meaning in Your Life Through Writing and Storytelling
by
Sam Keen
tmpting
, September 01, 2011
This book is a smorgasbord of ideas for the person, who, for whatever reason, is in search of their own life. Genuinely living your own life, not the life you've been told you are living, is a rare occurrence. It's not that it's difficult. It's just that it's not possible without some reflection. The authors of this book give multiple reflective exercises to help you become the author of your own life.

Using Beauty & Her Beast to Introduce the Human Shadow
by
Kay Plumb
tmpting
, September 01, 2011
The quote on the back of this book cover is what hooked me. "A human being simply cannot live a fairy tale life. Consider yourself warned." The illustrator of this book is as integral to the story as the writer. The result of their collaboration is an easy-to-read, & re-read, introduction to what is usually a very complicated, academic subject.

Taming Your Gremlin Revised Edition A Surprisingly Simple Method for Getting Out of Your Own Way
by
Carson, Rick
tmpting
, September 01, 2011
What a playful way to approach a serious subject! And, that's point, actually. Sometimes, the only approach is a playful one. Richard Carson leads by example, showing the way, in this delightful book. A great gift book idea. I mean, who do you know who doesn't have a gremlin, or two?

Rhythm of Compassion Caring for Self Connecting with Society
by
Gail Straub
tmpting
, September 01, 2011
This is not a quick-read; this is a workbook. But, as the title suggests, it is written with the utmost compassion, and urges you to connect to yourself & your life's work with compassion as well. I find myself re-reading a chapter, here or there, throughout the book, every few months, since in the re-reading there is only more discovery. Of all the books that flow into & out of my house, this one is a "keeper."

Plain & Simple A Womans Journey To The Amish
by
Sue Bender
tmpting
, September 01, 2011
I love quilts. What's not to love about something so warm & cozy, and beautiful, too? Just looking at the cover & reading the title told me that here was a book by a kindred spirit. Sue Bender succeeds in writing simply about her longing for, and her journey toward community; that sense of belonging we all crave. What better metaphor for community than the quilt; an assembly of small individual pieces of fabric into one, large, utilitarian whole?

Hunger Games 01
by
Suzanne Collins

I struggle trying to get my 12 year old son to read. So, when he comes to me and says, 'Mom, we need to get the other books in this series,' I sit up and take notice. I know of no higher praise for a book than my son wanting to read more from the same author.

Orwells Luck
by
Richard W Jennings
tmpting
, January 22, 2010
This book is an awesome read. Get over the fact that it is in the young adult section. I loved this book for these reasons: 1) Beautiful, humorous, occasional 'true grit' narrative; 2) I was over 1/2 way through the book before the gender of the narrator was revealed, it's truly as gender-neutral as you can get; 3) weeks later I still find myself musing on the questions this work raises about the source and function of luck in all our lives; 4) there's a rabbit on the cover - come on, who doesn't love bunnies? You should read it.
