Taciturn, prickly high school biology teacher Galilee "Gal" Garner is determined to discover a new rose variety that will win queen of show in a major competition. Though she has kidney disease and must have dialysis every few days, Gal manages to teach and garden with the help of one of her students, Brad, who helps with the roses, and Dara, the school's art teacher and Gal's friend. Gal's world is altered when her teenage niece, Riley, arrives unannounced. Seems Gal's estranged sister, Becky, had to go to Hong Kong for her job and Gal's parents are out of town, so Becky sends Riley to stay with Gal. The new relationship between aunt and niece benefits both Gal and Riley. "The Care and Handling of Roses with Thorns" is beautifully written with well-drawn, quirky characters. I highly recommend reading it.

Next to Love

Ellen Feldman

Author Ellen Feldman introduces readers to childhood friends Babe, Grace and Millie during the early years of World War II. Their husbands all serve their country in the war, but not all return, and those who do return are not the same as when they left. The women must somehow move on with their lives and marriages must travel lonely roads to be made whole again. I recommend this book for those who are interested in learning about World War II and the roles of women during that time.

Justice in June
by
Barbara Levenson

, June 05, 2010
It's no ordinary Monday at the office. In the course of two phone calls, Miami criminal defense attorney Mary Magruder Katz's life is turned upside down. First off, Judge Elizabeth Maxwell calls to request Mary's help. The judge is being investigated by the state attorney's office in relation to the assassination of a drug informant in a case over which the judge is presiding. Can Mary represent her? Next Mary's boyfriend, developer Carlos Martin, calls her because a family friend, Luis Corona from Argentina, has been arrested. Can Mary get him out of jail? Carlos doesn't know why Luis has been arrested, but when Mary rushes to the Dade County Jail, she discovers Luis has been arrested for terrorism. As if these two cases aren't enough, Mary's parents have set up a dinner with Mary and Carlos and Carlos' parents, and Mary is a little freaked out about this initial meeting of the parents. Will her worries be for naught? Added to Mary's plate is a lawsuit against Carlos concerning his latest development, which also brings Carlos' ex-wife into the picture. Oh, and did I mention someone has attacked Mary and trashed her house? Who knew being a lawyer was such a hazardous occupation? Mary is a strong, capable criminal defense attorney and a genuinely likable protagonist. Her personal life definitely has some interesting moments. Readers will find "Justice in June" to be a fast, sassy and fun read. I loved it! This is author Levenson's second Mary Magruder Katz book. "Fatal February" was the first in the series. Fans of Stephanie Plum and Kinsey Millhone will find a new author to love in Barbara Levenson. I highly recommend "Justice in June" and can't wait to find out what's next on Mary's caseload.

Wyatts Revenge
by
H Terrell Griffin

A retired trial lawyer should be relaxing in the Florida sun and that's exactly what Matt Royal is doing until one of his best friends, Laurence Wyatt, is murdered by a professional hit man. Royal needs to find out why his friend was murdered. With information gleaned from Wyatt's computer, Royal tracks down those behind the murder and attempts to extract justice for Wyatt's death, but finds himself a marked man. Royal relies on several of his friends from his military past to help him in a dangerous quest that takes him from Florida to Germany and back uncovering ties to Nazi Germany and the Middle East. He must dodge bombs and bullets to complete his mission. "Wyatt's Revenge" is a fast-paced mystery with plenty of murder and male camaraderie. Matt Royal is a likable guy and I'd like to read more of his antics. Author H. Terrell Griffin even threw in a little romance. All-in-all a great read.

This is a fast-paced thriller with Kelly Jones, FBI agent. The bodies of young women are piling up on campus. If Kelly isn't careful, she may end up a victim too. I recommend this to all mystery lovers.

Saffron Dreams
by
Shaila Abdullah
DarcyO
, November 21, 2009
In "Saffron Dreams" author Shaila Abdullah gives voice to Arissa Illahi, a Muslim Pakistani-American who loses her husband Faizan in the terror attack on 9/11. Arissa's story begins in Karachi where she is raised by a loving father and an absentee mother. When Arissa's mother moves out, Arissa must fill the void for her younger siblings. In Karachi, Arissa's family is affluent; her father is a doctor. Arranged marriages are a fact of life in Karachi and for Arissa as well. Arissa tells the story of her marriage to Faizan, their life in New York and his tragic death when the couple are expecting their first child. Hers is a mesmerizing story of love, loss, family, healing and recovery. The book opened my eyes to Pakistani and Muslim customs and how immigrants adjust to life in the United States. In the end, Arissa comes to gripes with herself and her future. I was hoping for a better resolution for Arissa and her mother though. I recommend this novel to those who would like to get a Muslim-American's view of the aftermath of 9/11.

Redemption
by
Laurel Dewey
DarcyO
, September 17, 2009
In Laurel Dewey's "Redemption," private investigator Jane Perry, a former Denver Police detective, takes a road trip from Denver to California with her client, Kit Clark, in search of Lou Peters, a man Kit says killed her granddaughter many years ago and who Kit believes is responsible for the disappearance of a 12-year-old in California. Though traveling together, the two don't always work together since Jane is not sure if Kit is seeking revenge for the murder of her granddaughter. And then there are the issues of Jane's addictions and Kit's New Age ways. Jane must search for clues in places she's not familiar with, including the home of a fundamentalist Christian leader. Hampering Jane's investigation is profiler and media maven Clinton Fredericks, who follows her every move. The follow-up to "Protector," which introduced flawed detective Jane Perry, "Redemption" peels away some layers of Jane's past as she travels the road to redemption. Jane is definitely flawed, but you gotta love her. She's a strong woman who cares about the victims and uses her wits and instincts to tackle her way through extreme circumstances. Dewey has given readers a page-turning tale of mystery with colorful characters in this second Jane Perry book. I can't wait to see what Jane will do next!

Golden's Rule
by
C. E. Edmonson

, September 03, 2009
Eighth-grader Maddie Bergamo's sudden collapse during a basketball game leads to a diagnosis of a brain tumor and her world is suddenly turned upside down. Instead of worrying about what college she'll attend or what boy she'll go to a dance with, she must now battle for her life. Maddie's high-powered lawyer parents are there to support and care for her. Her mother is black and her father is white and Maddie is proud to be biracial. Her mother gives Maddie a book of recollections written by her ancestor, Golden Lea Jackson, a former slave. Author Edmonson weaves a touching tale of two young women, Maddie and Golden Lea. One battles a tumor while the other battles for her freedom. Both display tremendous courage and spunk during their ordeals. And both are mightily changed by them. I found myself, like Maddie, impatient to read what would happen next for Golden Lea. I learned more about slavery and its roots in America. I highly recommend this heartwarming book to teens and adults alike.

First Night: Being a ghost story
by
Tom Weston
DarcyO
, August 23, 2009
History comes to life in Tom Weston's "First Night." San Diego sisters Alex and Jackie O'Rourke are stuck in Boston with their aunt and uncle for New Year's while their parents are off on a cruise. Alex, 16, is not happy about it, while Jackie, 14, is trying to have a good time. Their world collides with Sarah Pemberton's, a seventeenth century ghost accused of being a witch, rejecting the Kingdom of Heaven and challenging the Natural Order. Sarah comes before the court of Magistrates to address the charges against her and requests the help of an advocate. The court grants her request and she finds herself in the Boston of today trying to find an advocate and to make sense of all the changes made to the city since she last saw it, about 300 years earlier. She literally runs into Alex and the O'Rourke sisters decide to help her, with Jackie as Sarah's advocate. The girls make their way around Boston, searching for clues in their quest to refute the charges against Sarah. But time is running out because it's First Night in Boston and Sarah must appear before the Magistrates again before the night is over while Alex and Jackie need to join their aunt and uncle in New Year's Eve festivities. It takes all of Alex's wits to make sense of events and orchestrate a happy ending for all. This is a fun Alex and Jackie Adventure. I felt both girls were likable as was Sarah Pemberton. Author Weston's resolution was inventive and warm-hearted. Writings from the seventeenth century are used by Weston to begin each chapter and he also includes photos of Boston throughout the book. I would like to read more Alex and Jackie Adventures from Weston.

Dead Write A Forensic Handwriting Mystery
by
Sheila Lowe
DarcyO
, August 16, 2009
This is author Sheila Lowe's third installment in her Forensic Handwriting Series with Claudia Rose, a Los Angeles graphologist or handwriting expert. I had not read the first two books in the series and had no trouble catching up with what had happened in Claudia's past. Fresh off the heels of a close call with murder, Claudia is invited to New York to analyze handwriting samples for Baroness Grusha Olinetsky, a Russian woman who owns a matchmaking service. Claudia finds herself in the middle of what she thinks are the mysterious deaths of Grusha's clients and her graphology skills are put to the test to uncover a killer. Claudia's attempts to find the killer are thwarted by several suspects and also by Grusha herself. Throw in a little professional rivalry and some trust issues with her LAPD cop boyfriend and Claudia's week in New York turns into a whirlwind. I enjoyed this fast-paced mystery and was surprised by a few of the turns it took. I also appreciated Lowe's keen descriptions including "... a human tsunami flooding the streets" in her description of Forty-eighth Street. In this series, Lowe shares her skills in graphology with readers which may well nudge them into checking out her nonfiction books on handwriting analysis. Mystery lovers won't go wrong with "Dead Write."
