Saving Ceecee Honeycutt

I read a lot of books some very good and then some that are just okay. This one was wonderful. It left me with the feeling that I got when I read The Secret Life of Bees and The Help. I confess that I am a sucker for a Southern Novel because even though I love with all my heart the Northwest I yearn for home sometime. In the beginning of the book Ceecee lives with a mentally ill mom who she has to be a Mom too and as the book goes on her mom's death prompts a move to live with her Aunt Tootie in Savannah and the friends her Aunt Tootie has that become her family. It is yet another affimation of the fact that your family doesn't have to blood that they can be those you choose. Beth Hoffman so captures the Low Country of Ga and South Carolina that I felt like I was back there again in summer walking along the beaches of Tybee Island, watching a summer thunderstorm and walking through Forsyth Park. I can almost smell the night blooming jasmine and the Magnolias and Azaleas in bloom or feel myself sitting on the front porch drinking sweet tea. I think you will love Ceecee as much as I did and the other characters that Beth Hoffman creates . I almost with I could go live with Aunt Tootie myself

When She Flew
by
Jennie Shortridge

It is fast paced and a very believeable read. The book deals with an Iraq vet and his daughter who are homeless and what the system of govt tries to do for them believing they know best. It truly makes you think about what home really is and family and that sometimes in trying to do good the system actually does harm when it seperates families who are only guilty of poverty. The book is loosely based on actual events that took place here in Portland in 2004 I believe. The city in the story is actually Portland and the Park is Forest Park in Portland. There is another book based on this event called My Abandonment which is a good book to read along this with this one. I found at the end of the story what actually happened to the girl in the real story. I feel that Jennie Shortridge who is from the Seattle area also gets the culture of the Nortwest and Oregon down to a T. This is the first book of hers that I have read but will read more

Time Is A River
by
Mary Alice Monroe

I loved this book. It is a beatifully written novel that is so much more than a romance novel. It is a story of a woman who has been at her lowest in life and finds her way back again and rediscovers herself and her true beauty through the metaphor of fly fishing. It is set in the beautiful moutains of North Carolina which is one of the prettiest places on earth to me and Mrs. Monroe describes it with honesty and love. It combines a love of all things good about the south the hospitality, the ability to tell a good yarn and the love of home, family(the bonds of sisters) and about the love of the land and culture. All of this can be found in this book. I would recommend to anyone who just likes a good book and a story well told.(

I loved it and read it in a days time. I felt hooked into this story from the very beginning and loved the character development and the location. I feel this author knows how to write a fast pasted plot with believeable characters. I learned about the Amish of Ohio and their beliefs along the way. I feel this author has a long future ahead of her and look forward to more books by her.

I recieved this as an ARC from the publisher and on getting it thought I would just put it aside and read it later but upon reading the first few pages I was hooked. This book is laugh out loud funny and has some profound spiritual truths that we all much face at middle age. I identified with a lot of the stories even though I didn't grow up mennonite but southern baptist but a lot of the and beliefs are the same. I encourage anyone who wants a good laugh or heartwarming story to read this book.
