Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Voice in the Wind 01 Mark of the Lion

This is one of my favorite books of all time. A Voice in the Wind follows the young girl Haddasah as she struggles to be a Christian while living as a slave in Rome where being a Christian means death in the arena. However, it also follows the story of the family who owns her as they try and find their own path in the politics and upheaval of Rome. And ,as icing on the cake, wending his way through every storyline is a Germanic Gladiator who simply wishes to go home. Full of drama, suspense, romance and excitement Francine Rivers has created a masterpiece of storytelling with just enough of a Christian message to leave the reader feeling refreshed without drowning a story in a "happy go lucky" story. Whether Christian or just a lover of Roman history, A Voice in the Wind (and the whole series) is definitely something you'll want to check out.

Wired for Story The Writers Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook Readers from the Very First Sentence
by
Lisa Cron
Sarah Wager
, July 09, 2014
I have read many "how to write" books and found most follow the same pattern, the same exercises, the same three step plan that makes me wonder why I even picked up the book to begin with. But that was where Cron changed things. Rather than speak to us as writers she reminds us why we stick to books as readers. She then extrapolates upon those principles we hold dear and shows us how to create better stories that people will wish to read, just as other writers did before us. If you're interested in writing, or simply want to improve on your trade...this book is for you.
