Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Widow Basquiat

Was Jean-Michael Basquiat, infamous 1980's graffiti artist who became the (first Black) darling of the New York art world, a genius or lost soul? Apparently he was both. Dead before he turned 30, this is a bio from the viewpoint of his off-and-on love Susanne Mallouk. As so often happens, the woman suffers while the man gets to do as he pleases; yet Suzanne, now in her fifties, remained friends with Basquiat throughout. Her friend Jennifer Clement, an award-winning writer, wisely authored their story, written in short prose almost like poetry. We follow the doomed Basquiat through his drug-hazed fame and fortune--which he squanders--"with the fascination of horror. One of the more accessible, well-written celebrity bios out there.

Sophie Crumb: Evolution of a Crazy Artist (Limited Edition)

Fascinating, funny and beautifully done work by the only child of famed comic artist Robert Crumb and the less well-known Aline Komisky-Crumb. Sophie Crumb has clearly inherited the artistic talent of her folks; yet these drawings are all hers. As a graphic novel fan, I highly recommend the book.

As a fellow Laura Ingalls Wilder fan, and just a little older than the author, I absolutely love this book. It's surprisingly funny, yet full of fascinating information and cool illustrations as well. Highly Recommended
