Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Finders Keepers
by
Stephen King

Fans of Stephen King’s novel Mr. Mercedes, rejoice! His new book, Finders Keepers, has the return of one of my favorite detectives, Bill Hodges and introduces a “wonderful” new villain, Morris Bellamy. Sequels don’t always live up to the expectations set by the first novel, but this does not disappoint. No spoilers, but the end will leave you wanting more.

Lost in Translation: An Illustrated Compendium of Untranslatable Words from Around the World
by
Ella Frances Sanders

, October 25, 2014
I am a teacher of French and English as foreign languages, a word nerd and I also appreciate picture books and illustrated books in general. You can imagine my delight when I happened upon this beautiful little book, which is filled with words from around the world that have no word-to-word translation, but require a sentence or paragraph to relay the meaning. One of my favorites is tsundoku ( Japanese for “Leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piled up together with other unread books.” This book is definitely not part of my tsundoku collection, by the way. I’m thinking that it is a perfect little gift for my word-loving family members and friends. I wouldn’t use the Italian verb “commuovere” (to be moved in a heartwarming way, usually relating to a story that moved you to tears) to describe how I felt after reading Lost in Translation, but almost.

a la Mere de Famille: Recipes from the Beloved Parisian Confectioner
by
Merceron, Julien

WOW! I just got this book so I haven’t had time to try any of the recipes, but that doesn’t really matter. I (and my French students) have enjoyed poring over the pages. It is a feast for the senses, tactile and visual, from the lovely orange and green cover to the beautiful photos of the confections. It’s a history lesson and a memoir. It’s food porn. I am looking forward to baking with my daughter, which makes me think that this is the perfect Mother’s Day gift, especially since the French word for mother is in the name of the shop/title.

This book kept me up reading it. The main characters are extremely interesting and the story line was not what I expected, but I loved the surprise.

As an IB French teacher, I was "super contente" to find this workbook. It has all the elements required for the writing section of the IB exam since it includes both formal and informal French writing styles. It also includes current texting abbreviations. Merci Eliane Kurbegov.

Big Burn Teddy Roosevelt & the Fire That Saved America
by
Timothy Egan

Timothy Egan does it again. The Big Burn is a non-fiction book that reads like a novel. The characters in both Washingtons (DC and the state) are extremely vivid. It also taught me somethings about the history of the US and the Pacific Northwest.

Artemis Fowl 7 The Atlantis Complex
by
Eoin Colfer
Kimberly Uyyek
, January 05, 2011
My children and I have enjoyed all the audio versions of the Artemis Fowl series, but #7 has made my 10 year old daughter and myself laugh out loud almost non-stop, or sit on the edge of our seats. It is amazing how Eoin Colfer can come up so many clever twists on the adventures of the young genius and the Lower Earth population - fairies, centaurs. Nathaniel Parker reading (interpreting) the stories truly brings the characters to life. It probably goes without saying that you should start with the first book, but they're all fun to listen to.

I read this book a5 or 6 years ago and it has stayed with me all these years. I love the characters, especially the main one - Pi. I have told all my friends and family that they absolutely have to, simply must read this book.
