Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of the Princess Bride

I can't wait to meet Cary (aka Westley, Farm Boy, the Dread Pirate Roberts, Man in Black) Elwes tonight at the Cedar Hills Powell's. It's "INCONCEIVABLE" that this forever heartthrob from the Princess Bride (one on my all-time favorite movies) will be in my neighborhood. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity I can't miss! Kind of like "WUV, TWU WUV"...

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by
Rebecca Skloot

This is the best book I've read in a long time! I enjoyed how the timeline unfolds and the authors explanation of how she came to write this book. I had never heard of Hela cells or Henrietta Lacks, yet my life has been intimately affected by the miracle of her cells. There were moments that I got goosebumps reading this book, and there were moments that my mouth fell open. I highly recommend one-and-all to read this book. We owe so much to Henrietta Lacks for her cells, her family for sharing her story, and Rebecca Skloot for writing this story; reading this book and telling others about it is the LEAST I can do!

Lacuna

Barbara Kingsolver

Once again, Barbara Kingsolver creates a story that seems so real, I feel that I have lived the life of the main character, Harrison Shepherd, myself. She is such a talented and gifted author who uses her intelligence to bring out the heart and soul of life. My life has been enriched by her storytelling.
