Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Paper Bag Princess The Story Behind the Story 25th Anniversary Edition
by
Munsch, Robert
Kim G.
, May 01, 2010
This has been one of my favorite books since I discovered it in 1989. I must admit to having never been a princess type of girl but this was a princess book I could love. Currently I have lost track of how many copies of this books I have given out. It is my go to book for when my family/friends are expecting. I’ve given it for graduation, birthdays and for just no reason other than happy book day. My 2-year old nephew even enjoys it. This is the best princess book out there. Thank you Mr. Munsch, you taught a generation of girls that we don’t need a prince to save us, princesses are just as tough.

Yurts Living In The Round
by
Becky Kemery
Kim G.
, March 24, 2008
My husband and I have been staying in yurts for years on the Oregon Coast. The Oregon Parks and Recreation does a fabulous job with the upkeep of all their yurts. We have completely fallen in love with “yurting,” so much so that we plan to purchase our own yurt someday. Prior to the recent publication of this book, we mainly did our research online. There are other books out on yurts but nothing as comprehensive as Becky Kemery’s book. Ms. Kemery’s book is a fascinating read on the history of yurts. The photographs of yurts are beautiful. Ms. Kemery has gone into so much detail, discussing yurt companies, building codes and construction. This wonderful book has given our dream of yurt owning more detail. Sharing this book has made it possible for family and friends to understand our love of yurting and see what we hope to build someday.

Best Christmas Pageant Ever
by
Barbara Robinson

, December 16, 2007
Every Christmas our Mom would read this delightful story to my sister and me. We never tired of hearing it year after year. When we were old enough to read ourselves, she had to buy us two copies as we didnât want to share. I love sharing this story with my nephews now. It wouldnât be Christmas without reading this book.

Between Two Worlds Escape From Tyranny
by
Zainab Salbi
Kim G.
, December 13, 2006
This is one of the most poignant books I have ever read. It is such an important book that it should be required reading. Ms. Salbi takes us inside Iraq and a view of the country, people and politics that most Americans are unaware existed. It is amazing the personal strength that carried Ms. Salbi through her life so far. Her organization, Women for Women International, has done so much good since it?s inception in 1993. She was even allowed to return to her home country to help there too. This is one of the books that I will take off my shelf every few years to re-read.

Leap Days: Chronicles of a Midlife Move
by
Katherine Lanpher
Kim G.
, November 03, 2006
What a joy it was to read this book! I must confess to missing hearing Ms. Lanpher terribly on Air America radio. Her book was worth the wait. Lanpher?s vivid descriptions made me feel as if I too was there witnessing her life. There were times when I was giggling uncontrollably and then I was wiping away a tear. I too now want to take trapeze lessons and cross-country ski the Hudson River. It was comforting to know that I am not the only person who answers the question of how many kids do you have the same way. Thank you Ms. Lanpher for sharing your triumphs and struggles. I can?t wait to share this book.
