Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Way of the Peaceful Warrior A Book That Changes Lives
by
Dan Millman

, January 21, 2015
This book came to me at the perfect time. Amidst grieving the loss of a loved one, I sought out stories with positive messages and themes of hope. This definitely fit the bill. Dan's journey with his teacher, the aptly named Socrates, focused on inner strength and bigger picture ideas. I very much enjoyed the sentiment; my criticism lies in the repetition of many points and the tendency to preach. I also would have appreciated knowing just how much is fact vs. fiction, but in the epilogue the author doesn't seem to ever want to reveal that... which leads me to believe it's more fiction than fact. Nonetheless, three stars for a solid, positive vibe.

Boom, Bust, Boom: A Story about Copper, the Metal That Runs the World
by
Carter, Bill

, April 21, 2014
I love all of Bill's books and Boom, Bust, Boom is no exception. I had no idea how much our world depended on copper before reading this, and how much danger some of our most beautiful places on earth are enduring as a result. It's hard not to become an activist after reading this well-researched, sincere book.
