Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Eats Shoots & Leaves The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation
by
Lynne Truss

I never cared much about semicolons before I read this book. Now I'm not afraid of them! Ms. Truss makes reading about punctuation actually seem fun. This book is a miracle.

This is a beautiful book. Wonderfully written, I felt fully involved with the characters, the time, and the town. I didn’t want the book to end.

I am going to hike the Appalachian Trail when I get out of the Navy and this book is the reason! A wonderful account of the journey, hardships, and history of some beautiful country.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed the movie much more. The story is great until you get to the end. The end of the book bummed me out.

An awesome read. I love the hell hound. He’s super cute. Plus, the angels and demons really lead me to believe that mankind isn’t doing so bad for itself after all.

Not bad. The classic by Maurice Sendak, and your own imagination, is still the best story.

Mark Dunn is a master wordsmith! The story, told through letters, of the craziness on one small country’s leaders and how the regular people tried to handle it.

The first non-fiction book I ever remember reading. It is a thoroughly engrossing story of the men who were held as POWs during WWII.

The Once and Future King

White, T. H.

This is the best book in the world! I've read it eight times and I will continue reading it throughout my life. One of the best aspects is that as Arthur grows, the writing style changes. When he's a young boy, the book is written as though it's for young boys, instead of just as a prelude to the important stuff later on. I love this book.

I read this again after having read the series back in high school. I think the Vampire series is the more well written of the two. If you really want to flex your mental muscle, try doing up a family tree while reading this and keeping everyone straight!

Eh, this was an alright book. Not really a literary masterwork, but some of the ideas about ancient origins are pretty interesting.
