Education of Ivy Blake
by
Ellen Airgood
McGuffy Ann Morris
, June 15, 2015
This heartfelt middle-school novel is the companion to Prairie Evers. In the original book, we met Prairie Evers and her wonderful family. They lived on a farm in the country. Ivy was new to Prairie’s school, but they became very close friends. Due to her own family situation, Ivy eventually went to live with the Evers’ family. Now, Ivy has been reunited with her mother. They have moved back to the city where they hope to start a new life together. Ivy struggles to maintain her friendship with Prairie though long distance phone talks and weekend sleepovers. As she begins to get settled into her new school, she does make new friends, though. Her artwork seems to be taking a new exciting direction, too. However, to her shock and disappointment, Ivy realizes that her mother has not changed. In fact, her irrational behavior, impulsiveness, and immaturity present very serious problems for both of them. As things change again for Ivy, she learns lasting lessons about friends, family, love, and above all: herself. Ivy Blake is a hero for all ages. I think that author Ellen Airgood may be, too.

Let Me Die in His Footsteps
by
Lori Roy
McGuffy Ann Morris
, June 02, 2015
It is 1952. Fifteen-year-old Annie Halloran is following an old tradition handed down through generations. At midnight, she sneaks out to go to an old well on the Baines’ neighboring Kentucky farm. She hopes to see the image of her future husband gazing back at her from the water in the old well. However, the Hallorans' and Baines' have a very complicated and violent history. On this night, the past will come back to haunt both families, as well as the town they all share. No one writes Southern Gothic better than Lori Roy. Her understanding of family secrets, feuds, history, and folklore is deep and satisfying. Each of her atmospheric novels is beautifully written. Lori Roy never disappoints.

Born Without a Tail: The Making of an Animal Advocate
by
C. A. Wulff
McGuffy Ann Morris
, May 18, 2015
For much of her life, C. A. Wulff was involved in animal rescue. In this memoir, she shares her own personal rescue stories. As is the case with animal rescue, some of these tales are funny and others are poignant. However, all of them are true. From early childhood, Cayr was drawn to animals. She sought connections with each animal that entered her life. She helped those that she could, including ill, injured and difficult to place animals. Many of them found a permanent place in the author’s home. Her heart has always been in the right place. At this point in her life, the author spends much of her time in advocacy. In addition to her animal books, C.A. Wulff writes for the National Animal Books Examiner, Cleveland Pets Examiner, and her own blog “Up on the Woof”. She also is an artist, utilizing her “yelodoggie” art to share her love of dogs.

Dirty Chick: Adventures of an Unlikely Farmer
by
Antonia Murphy
McGuffy Ann Morris
, April 09, 2015
Antonia Murphy was a fast paced city journalist from San Francisco. However, after becoming a parent she decided that she needed to settle down to raise her family in a close, supportive environment. Antonia and her husband ended up on a farm in New Zealand. Making it their home, they felt they could focus on the important things: family and community. From the very beginning of this memoir, the author engages the reader with humour and wit. Some of the stories we read about are the problems of an errant rooster, the charms of both alpacas and goats, raining lambs, and the issues of wandering cows. Along with these exploits are many other related issues of farming. We learn of pitfalls in making cheese, and the extra benefits of homemade wine. Again, generous humour is added to both recipes. However, there are many valuable life lessons in this colourful book, as well. This is a memoir that has it all: family drama, rich humour, critters, world travel, and so much more. It is all told with a generous heart and warm soul. I can only hope that Antonia Murphy will write more about the adventures on her New Zealand farm. She may be a dirty chick, but she is my kind of person!

All the Bright Places
by
Jennifer Niven
McGuffy Ann Morris
, January 16, 2015
This is an emotionally charged novel about two mismatched young people. Violet is a popular cheerleader; manic Finch is considered the school “freak”. It seems they should have nothing in common, but they do. Violet is trying desperately to cope with the sudden loss of her sister. A car accident took the life of her sister, leaving Violet the sole survivor of the crash. She is left with devastating guilt, causing her to rethink life. Finch leads a manic way of life giving him the label, “The Freak”. He is always changing his persona and his outlook. He is also constantly plagued by thoughts of depression and suicide. One day the two teens meet through dangerous and unusual circumstances. Together, they set off on a life altering journey. Neither one of them will ever be the same. Jennifer Niven has written an extraordinary novel that goes far beyond youthful angst. This brave, heartrending story delves into the deep recesses of the troubled teenaged psyche. Watch for the movie based on this incredible book.

Undertakers Daughter
by
Kate Mayfield
McGuffy Ann Morris
, January 14, 2015
As the daughter of an undertaker, Kate Mayfield experienced a very unconventional childhood. It was 1959, and she was just beginning grade school when her father moved the family to Jubilee, Kentucky. There he fulfilled his dream when he opened a funeral home in the family residence. Funerals were commonplace in the family home. One of four children, Kate learned to be quiet and essentially invisible, but never by choice. While her older siblings were able to have activities outside the home, she struggled with this imposed solitude throughout her childhood. Kate takes us through her developing years. She tells what it was like with a busy, charismatic father and a stoic, unhappy mother. Her brother was smart and easygoing, but her older sister had serious anger issues, often striking out at Kate and her younger sister. It isn’t until much later that these issues are painfully addressed. Kate tells of the difficulty of trying to fit in with schoolmates. Friendships don’t come easy to a child growing up in a “creepy” funeral home. Her closest friends end up being the family housekeeper, and an eccentric elderly friend (and eventual benefactor) of the family. Kate’s story is much more than being an undertaker’s daughter, however. She writes with candor of early forbidden love, racism, and the complexities of growing up in small town USA during the turbulent 1960s. In addition, she offers interesting historical background of her home town and its people. Ultimately, Kate Mayfield has written a beautiful memoir. Sharing her experiences with clarity and insight, she draws you in with honesty and keeps there with keen emotion. I loved this memoir.

The Resurrection of Tess Blessing
by
Lesley Kagen
McGuffy Ann Morris
, January 09, 2015
By Lesley Kagen Tess Blessing is fast approaching the age of fifty when she gets the unexpected bad results of a mammogram. Suddenly she is trying to deal with the reality of breast cancer. Now Tess feels she must resolve several issues before what she is sure is her impending death. So, she makes a “To Do” list. Not to be confused with a “Bucket List” of wishes, Tess’s list involves many serious issues. She is dealing with a stagnate relationship with her spouse, her daughter’s eating disorder, a teenaged son who needs guidance, a longtime estrangement from her sister, and her own leftover childhood issues. Tess is resolved to handle all of this on her own, in her own way. However, there are things happening that she does not know or see. Tess is not alone on life’s journey or in her current mission. She has a very unique, perhaps divine, personal “helper”. There is extraordinary magic here. Lesley Kagen is a very special author. She skillfully blends drama, tragedy, and life events with her trademark heartwarming sense of humour. Ms. Kagen flawlessly makes every situation she tackles both touching and inspiring. I am sure you will love Lesley Kagen and The Resurrection of Tess. I also recommend the “sister” novella The Undertaking of Tess. This sweet book tells the story of Tess’s childhood, giving both background and depth to Tess. However, please do not stop there. Lesley Kagen has written several fine books. Her ability to bring to life the complexity of sisterhood, relationships, childhood memories, and life events is incomparable. This is an author not to be missed.

Letter to My Cat
by
Lisa Erspamer
McGuffy Ann Morris
, December 22, 2014
This book is a love letter, filled with love letters. It is for everyone who has ever loved or been loved by a cat. A loving tribute, it illuminates the bond between human and feline in a very open and sincere way. Each letter is written by an actual “cat owner”, though I really do not like that term. The authors are from a variety of backgrounds, occupations, and walks of life. Speaking to their cat, they lovingly discuss their relationship, events, what the cat has added or given to their life. The letters describe in all honesty how this special bond has affected the human’s life, even making them a better person. In addition, a beautiful photograph of the cat accompanies the letter. The photos further reflect the uniqueness of the individual cat. This is a visual reminder that each cat is different in its own wonderful way. In this same way, each bond and experience is unique and special. This beautiful book is a loving testament to this amazing human/feline bond. It is a meaningful, heartfelt and genuine book to be cherished forever. Thankfully, over the years I have done this with my “own” cats, as well as my dogs. I recommend you do, too. And I sincerely recommend this book.

Mari is a happily married, stay at home mother of two children. However, her own childhood is a mystery to many. In fact, Mari does not seem to remember much of her childhood. Her psychiatrist husband, Ryan, is one of the few who knows the complicated truth. It was his father who researched her after she was found as a feral child living with her grandmother, in the backwoods of Pennsylvania. Now, years later, Ryan and Mari are facing some marital difficulties. Self-serving Ryan delves into his father’s research to uncover more truths about his wife’s past. He intends to write a bestseller, in hopes of salvaging both his career and family finances. In order to research and write his book properly, he feels that he needs to move his family back to Mari’s childhood home. The facts of Mari’s childhood and life do come to light, with all of the horrific and traumatic truths. Megan Hart is the author of numerous books. Lovely Wild is a riveting, yet poignant novel. The author describes a backwoods childhood in deep poverty and dysfunction with clear eyes and heart. She writes of the trials of a contemporary marriage with equal clarity. Ultimately, Lovely Wild is a story that will draw you into its unique world, make you think, and stay with you after you close the book.

Paula Treick DeBoard

, November 04, 2014
The Kaufman’s are a close and happy family. Curtis is a respected high school teacher. Kathleen is a creative interior designer. Their eldest child, Daniel, is a musical prodigy. He is away at college on generous scholarships. Youngest child, Olivia is a normal, happy, middle school student. Late one night the Kaufman’s receive a phone call that no parent ever should. Their son, Daniel, has been killed in in a hit and run accident. This will have devastating, permanent impact on this family. Each family member reacts to grief in their own way. Unfortunately, this tears them apart. Curtis withdraws into an obsession of Daniel’s wrongful death. He strongly feels that the man who recklessly killed Daniel should be held accountable, to the fullest extent possible. This affects his relationships and his career. Kathleen tries to go on with life. She wants to heal and make her living family members happy. She relocates to another state and builds her business there. She wants Curtis and Olivia to join her, so they be a real family again. They remain resistant to any changes. Olivia is torn apart by the loss of her brother, and the loss of her family. She develops phobias and begins to keep a book listing the bad things that could happen. Ultimately, when her mother leaves, Olivia chooses to stay with her father. She feels he understands her pain. Together they forge an existence, until the pain becomes too much to bear. Curtis finds out that the man who killed Daniel has been released from prison early. This sends Curtis over the edge. He wants this man to pay for what he did. He will make this his mission, resulting in even more devastating consequences. This novel follows the family as they grieve separately, each in their own way. As their story unfolds, we understand why they feel as they do about both life and death. We see their pain, and we see them search for healing. The journey through tragedy is poignant and very human. Paula Treick DeBoard is one of my favorite authors. She understands family relationships and dynamics, especially in the wake of tragedy. Her writing is powerful. The stories and characters will stay with you long after you close the book.

My Sisters the Saints A Spiritual Memoir
by
Colleen Carroll Campbell
McGuffy Ann Morris
, October 21, 2014
This spiritual memoir is powerful. The author draws the reader in with its very human journey. The challenges she faces are very relatable. As she is dealing with illness and loss, relationships, the draw of motherhood, career issues, and more, she is also trying to find her place in the world. Ultimately, she turns to her Catholic roots to help sort it all out. Reconnecting with women saints at critical junctures along the way, the author finds a sense of sisterhood. She realizes these very human women faced similar challenges. Each saint struggled with spirituality in a harsh human world, too. Reading the words from their personal journey, she is able to draw inspiration and strength for her own. This beautiful memoir reads easily and quickly, but leaves you feeling fulfilled. As a woman who was raised Southern Baptist and converted to Catholicism, I could relate to her spiritual journey. This is an important book that I will read again and again.

Crooked River
by
Valerie Geary
McGuffy Ann Morris
, October 13, 2014
Sam and her younger sister, Ollie, have a lot to adjust to since their mother’s death. Sam is trying to deal with her own grief, and Ollie has gone silent since her mother’s death. To make things more confusing, Ollie believes she is seeing spirits or “Shimmerings” as she calls them. The girls are sent to live with their father. Bear is reclusive, living in a teepee in the woods at the edge of town. Many question his ways and whether he can raise children in such an unusual way. However, Bear tries to be a good father. Gentle and attentive, he teaches the girls about nature, beekeeping, and simple living. The girls become as protective of him as he is of them. This family love and commitment will be put to a harsh test. One hot summer day, the girls find a dead woman’s body in Crooked River near their homestead. With the recent death of their mother too raw, they decide not to tell anyone. Then evidence begins to mount that their father may somehow be involved. Sam sets out on a mission to seek justice and prove that Bear is not involved. Searching for the killer, she uncovers secrets that will change everything for her entire family. Her pursuit for the truth will also jeopardize the safety of both herself and Ollie. Everything that Sam thought she could count on comes into question. Both Sam and Ollie are easy characters to care about, immediately drawing the reader into their story. The writing is direct and flows nicely, quickly pulling the reader along as Sam solves the mystery of Crooked River. I enjoyed Valerie Geary’s debut novel, and will definitely be looking for future stories by her.

How to Be a Good Wife
by
Emma J Chapman
McGuffy Ann Morris
, October 06, 2014
Many years ago, successful educator Hector Bjornstad found Marta in a very traumatized state after an accident killed both of her parents. He helped rehabilitate fragile Marta and gave her a home. Though there is a twenty year age difference, they then married and had a son. Now that their son is grown and moving on, Marta feels a sense of sadness and loss. She finds herself struggling to find her place in life and the world around her. Very unhappy, Marta feels that things are just not quite right. To clear her head, Marta stops taking her longtime antianxiety medicine. Though Marta has taken this for many years, she strongly feels she does not need it. Not wanting to upset her husband and son, so she pretends to take it. This is the first of many secrets. Suddenly, Marta begins to see things and hear voices that are not there. These sights and sounds seem to be centered around a young girl who seems to be in trouble. Marta feels the girl is trying to communicate with her. She becomes obsessed with this tragic girl and helping her. Marta feels she is missing something important. As things progress, Marta becomes afraid. Nothing is as it seems. Time seems to shift without her knowledge. Sights and sounds are unreliable. Though a nonsmoker, cigarettes appear in her purse. She even finds herself smoking. She both questions and alienates those around her as her tries to keep her many secrets. However, she must figure things out. The detailed writing of this book is almost lyrical. Emma Chapman sets a stage carefully. She uses precision in telling a suspenseful tale of a woman trying to find herself, again. I found this book unsettling, yet oddly satisfying in its delivery. I am hoping this author has more to offer.

The Angry Woman Suite
by
Lee Fullbright
McGuffy Ann Morris
, August 11, 2014
This intense novel tells a multigenerational story of a complicated family. It is told through different voices over various points in time. Each voice has its own viewpoint, differing greatly but equally important. We are first introduced to Elyse. She tells the difficult story of her childhood. Much of her early years revolve around her stepfather, Francis. Francis is a renowned musician and very complicated man. The second voice in this dark saga is Francis. Raised by women with strong, distinct personalities, Francis is at odds with his own childhood. This affects him on many levels. He becomes an angry, self-absorbed, complex man with numerous issues, including perhaps those of entitlement. The third strong voice in this multilayered drama is Aidan, a trusted family friend and mentor to Francis. Aidan’s journal tries to explain events and relationships objectively. He knows many truths and has kept them for many years. There are many other interesting characters in this heartbreaking novel, including the “Angry Woman”. Her role is another important layer, tying together many twists and turns. Dysfunction runs deep in this mosaic of emotional characters. The author is detailed and thorough. She laces each entangled history with betrayal, feuds, secrets, and other dark facets of real life. As in real life, answers don’t always come easy and some secrets are better left alone. Lee Fullbright has written a novel that will both haunt you and leave you thinking.

Seventh Mother
by
Sherri Wood Emmons
McGuffy Ann Morris
, July 29, 2014
Emma is a young woman who is overcoming a troubled past. While working at a ranch in Idaho she meets seasonal worker Brannon Bohner. Brannon is the single father of eleven year old Jenny. Emma falls for Brannon and cares about Jenny, too. Jenny is happy to have Emma as part of their life. She is hoping that this time she will have a real mother. Jenny doesn’t really remember her mother. She does remember the succession of women over the years, though. Each woman took her mother’s place, if just for a while. Brannon and Jenny never stay in one place for very long. They travel back and forth across the country, as Brannon finds seasonal work along the way. As the ranch season in Idaho closes, Brannon talks Emma into moving on to Kentucky with him and Jenny. Finally settling into a permanent home, school, and life with friends, Jenny holds out hope they will finally be a real family. Indeed, everything seems to be going well until Brannon begins to have sudden mood swings. Emma struggles to understand Brannon while protecting herself, and Jenny, too. However, everything that Jenny thought she knew comes into question when she finds a box of her father’s mementoes up in the attic. She starts to question her own memories as she curiously sorts through the items. At first hiding them, she tries to figure out their importance. But as she comes to frightening conclusions, Jenny finally shares her finds with Emma. They both know that nothing will ever be the same for anyone. This is an amazing novel of relationships, both those we choose and those we are born into. Ms. Wood has a special understanding of family dynamics, particularly the mother-daughter bond. This suspenseful novel is gripping and heartrending. It will make you feel, as well as think. I highly recommend The Seventh Mother. Sherri Wood Emmons books are intimate and engaging. The stories stay with you long after you finish the book. I have been a serious fan since the release of her first book, Prayers and Lies. I eagerly look forward to her future books, as well.

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation for Animals: A Guide for the Consumer
by
Pt Susan E. Davis
McGuffy Ann Morris
, April 21, 2014
Physical therapy is not only for humans. It is actually beneficial to many animals. Whether the animal is a pampered pet or a working animal, there are many benefits to be gained. This book explains the needs and benefits of physical therapy. Author Susan E. Davis is a licensed physical therapist. She has more than three decades of experience. She worked initially in human physical therapy, but then veterinary physical therapy became her specialty. She has worked in many settings, from homecare to zoos. Physical therapy is used for a variety of reasons, treating the various stages of life, illness, injury, and age. Physical therapy can also prevent or treat injuries. This is especially helpful in those who are active or working, whether in a competitive arena or a working situation. It can strengthen or promote healing, depending upon the need and case. In this book, you will learn about the history and evolution of physical therapy. You will also learn about the many methods available, and their particular benefits. There are natural (holistic) methods available. These types of therapy may include Reiki and acupuncture, as well as many other options. Traditional methods may involve splints, wraps, and the use of manipulation or equipment. The reader learns the differences in traction and strengthening, as well as how each one works. Using actual case studies, you will learn how the type of physical therapy is prescribed. You will then see how it can be utilized properly. Each animal, like each human, is different in both need and capability. Only a qualified healthcare expert can diagnose and prescribe the appropriate method. However, an educated owner can help in maintenance and care of their pets. The book is easy to read and use. The author lists related topics and resources along with the appendix. I recommend this book to pet owners, and to those who work with animals. I have used physical therapy, and performed it on my pets. I can attest to its many benefits in healing and in prolonging quality of life. This is an essential volume to those who love the animals in their care.

Mommy's a Mole: Unravelling the Joan Webster Murder & Other Secrets in a CIA Family
by
Eve Carson
McGuffy Ann Morris
, April 21, 2014
This is a true story, written by one who lived it. Author Eve Carson writes about what happened in her own family, and her necessary search for justice. The story actually begins many years ago. It is Thanksgiving weekend, 1981, and Joan Webster is traveling through Logan Airport. However, she never makes it to her destination; she comes up missing. Married to Joan’s brother, and friends with Joan, author Eve Carson pursues justice for Joan and the family. She is horrified, but motivated by the things that she uncovers. Though for her it began with the disappearance of Joan, she finds that Joan may have been collateral damage. The more she learns, the messier the entire case gets. Things are not what they had seemed. In this thick book, Eve goes over the case, people involved, and the evidence she uncovers in great detail. She includes a Timeline at the rear of the book, as well as copies of actual documents and proof. Her private investigation is thorough and impressive. Sadly, as she finds herself embroiled in the case, Eve ends up losing her own family. Her husband and his family turn on her. There are many victims and extensive fall out in this story. However, Eve does not give up in her pursuit of justice. Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the case is that the more “dirt” Eve uncovers, the more the authorities look away. It is my hope that Eve’s book will bring this case to the proper authorities, who will resolve this miscarriage of justice. Only then will healing begin.

Small Moments A Childs Memories of the Civil Rights Movement
by
Mary M Barrow
McGuffy Ann Morris
, April 07, 2014
Mary M. Barrow was born to a large Southern family in Tennessee. As was customary in the 1950s, the Barrow family employed Amelia. She served as both nanny and housekeeper. Early in the 1960s, Mary’s family relocated to New Jersey when her father found new employment there. Amelia moved with the family, leaving the south and life as she knew it behind. Times were changing for the Barrows, Amelia, and America. It was the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. Mary shares her experiences, as seen through the eyes of a child. Making it even more unique, she was a child from the south who moved to the north. This made her acutely aware of the differences in the treatment of Amelia. She also learned the truths of Amelia’s past. The trials of her life included extreme poverty, the consequences of alcoholism, abuse by a spouse, and the heartbreaking loss of a child. Mary M. Barrow shares her memoir of a time and place in American history. However, this book is so much more. Her beautiful writing involved me from beginning to end. I will not forget the people of this very heartfelt and moving book.
