This coming of age in America story works equally well for teens and adults. It reminded me of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" with its gritty realism and young Kimberly's striving for a better life through education. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was moved by it.

Based on the author's childhood memories of leaving Saskatchewan for Toronto, this poignant and lovely picture book perfectly captures a child's eye view of the people and places that make up her small world as she prepares to say goodbye before moving to another home. The concrete details, gorgeous prose and the stylish, modern art of the illustrations, showing many perspectives, provide a memorable reading experience. This is the most talked about book of the year among our youth services library staff.
