Fairytale Retellings 01 Sisters Red

Jackson Pearce

My thoughts...I went into this knowing the cover is brilliant and the author is bubbling with personality. The back of the book reveals this is a sort of Little Red Riding Hood tale. It instantly set me on the edge of my seat, chewing on my lip. It is scary, edgy and intense-and that's just the prologue. The actual story starts years later, when the March sisters, Scarlett and Rosie live in a small cottage where they live as hunters (also revealed on the back cover). They search for and destroy the creatures that destroyed their former lives and their innocence. We also meet Silas, the young woodsman who lives up the road. His fate has let him on a similar path, although it is clear early on he does not embrace his fate like Scarlett March does. I felt that all of the characters were brilliantly written. I could sympathize with each of the March sisters and their unique situations. I have to admit once I discovered this was a fairy tale remake, I was a bit concerned. Fortunately, there was no reason for to worry. Sisters Red takes some of the themes from Little Red and uses them to create a very exciting paranormal tale. The story is full of suspense, the kind where you want to warn the characters to "turn around" or "don't talk to them". Aside from the action, this blooms into a love story, a bittersweet one. I found myself torn between heart and head, wanting peace for all the characters involved. I did find the twist a bit predictable, but this just allowed me to enjoy the details of the story more. It actually built my anticipation, waiting to see how things would unfold. Overall, this is a wonderful book for fans of YA of any age. I did not notice an abundance of foul language or sexual situations (just some mild kissing). The book is rated ages 15 and up, I imagine due to the violence. Some of the scenes are pretty grizzly. For my first fairy tale retelling, this one set the bar pretty high!

Vampire Academy: #1
by
Richelle Mead

My thoughts...I must have been living under a rock because out of all the YA vampire novels I have read, this is one of my favorite. I do not know why I waited so long to read it. Vampire Academy introduces us to Rose, a kick-butt heroine who would sacrifice herself to defend her friend Lissa. Rose is drawn to her trainer, Dimitri who is not only kick butt, he's sexy. Readers are also introduced to several other characters in the story. I liked Chirstian from the start. I hope we see more of him in future books. While there are similarities to other YA vampire novels, Richelle Mead puts her own spin on the story and makes it unique and interesting. Once I got to about the 50th page, I devoured the story. While the majority of the characters in the story are teenagers, they are mature. They find themselves in dangerous situations, but they still manage to use common sense. There are a few scenes of an adult nature, but they are tastefully written and not very graphic. The story provided quite a bit of background about the Vampires and Dhapirs without boring the reader. The ending left a great lead into the next book, Frostbite. The cons...I have none. This book far exceed what I expected and I can't wait to continue in the series.

Wicked Lovely 04 Radiant Shadows
by
Melissa Marr

My thoughts...Once again Melissa Marr whisks readers off to a magical world where the veil between Mortal and Faerie worlds is thin. She uses her writing talents to manipulate readers into falling for, even rooting for, the characters in the story, even when it's the villain. Radiant Shadows shifts focus from Aislinn and Seth to Ani, daughter of Gabriel, and Devlin, the high Queen's Bloody Hands. The characters were brilliantly written. I felt sympathy for Devlin; felt his indecision as he is torn between sisters and his own will. Ani proves to be a very strong heroine. She struggles to find her place within the hunt and to control the way she feeds. Ani's strengths are growing as she becomes less Mortal and more Faerie. We also meet several new characters who help build the story and keep it interesting. The plot of the series continues to develop strongly in Radiant Shadows. A large chunk of the story takes place within the Dark Court. Readers get to ride along on a hunt, listen in on conversations with the old King and the new one, and live through Ani and Tish. There is a fair share of violence in the form of faerie fighting, romance, and new mysteries. One of my favorite parts of Radiant Shadows is the introduction of a steed. I found myself concerned for its welfare and whereabouts. I stumbled a bit through the beginning of the book. I would recommend readers to go back and reread the last few chapters of Fragile Eternity before jumping in to Radiant Shadows. I had to get re-acclimated with the characters, their roles, and relationships to each other. If you are new to the series, you need to start at the beginning. Their world is too complex to enjoy without having the background from the previous books. Fans of this series will not be disappointed with this installment of the series. Radiant Shadows held a satisfying ending, but it did leave many questions unanswered. I will be anxiously awaiting the next installment.
