Strayed writes beautifully, her wonderful compassionate spirit just shines through in this book. I loved this memoir of a woman who finds herself on the Pacific Crest Trail after spiraling seriously downward after her beloved mother dies young & unexpectedly from cancer. I'm not a fan of the Burroughs style messed-up-person memoir, but this book drew me right in - wonderful writing and a very likeable narrator who is beautifully honest & candid about her faults and missteps and who finds her way to self acceptance at the end. Plus, funny moments, Oregon author, and takes place mostly on the California to Oregon parts of the Pacific Crest Trail, with lovely descriptive details of the scenery and the horribleness but sometimes beauty of hiking by oneself for 100+ days with a too-heavy pack and too-small boots.

Advent Book 1

This is an engrossing literary fantasy featuring Gavin, a 15 year old modern day English boy who has always has seen things his unsympathetic parents and teachers would prefer he not mention. It also features the 16th century historical figure Johann Faust - a great magician in this book - and the intersection of Gavin and Faust and the advent of magic again in modern times in an enchanting, rather gothic, and mystery filled story. Think Susan Cooper's Dark Is Rising meets Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. It's written for adults, though would have crossover appeal for teens. A great choice for fans of literary fantasy. I was a little dismayed to realize it's book 1 and I wouldn't get total resolution in this lengthy book. But I am very much looking forward to book 2, which it seems might feature some sort of scary whale and fascinating oceanic mythology.
