Leaving Gees Bend
by
Irene Latham

Leaving Gee's Bend is a fast moving story about a girl living in Alabama in the 1930's. In it, a young girl must be strong and make serious decisions. Her mother is dying and in her journey to get help, the main character finds herself breaking rules or questioning what she has been told. She faces many conflicts and obstacles. It is an interesting, well written book that brings history and culture alive. Along with and interesting read, this book would be great for classroom discussions surrounding prejudice, economic difficulties or decision-making, just to name a few possible topics.

West Wind is a book of poetry that would appeal both to readers who appreciate poetry, as well as those who find poetry difficult to comprehend. In her writing, Mary Oliver explores with a sense of wonder, the amazing connectedness of nature. Among a wide variety of topics, her powerful observations and gentle interpretations allow the reader to ponder beginnings , endings and the curiosities of life.

This book took me on a journey unlike any book I have read. Filled with discovery, intense moments, vivid descriptions, and a total appreciation for nature the author takes the reader with her on this unusual journey. I would highley recommend this to anybody who enjoys rowing, kayaking or outdoor adventure, but additionally would recommend it to anyone who enjoys an extremely well written story.
