Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Vish Puri is clearly the love child of Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, complete with mustaches. I have been recommending this series to my mystery noir patrons with great success.

Health Care (Opposing Viewpoints)

healthcare is a confusing issue for kids, while this book has a slight liberal slant, no one can deny it covers both viewpoints very well. It uses clear and concise language to illustrate America's healthcare issues, and covers both sides of the argument well. Every debate coach in the country should have one as a source book. It was certainly checked often in our library.

A Whole Nother Story

This is one of the best new Juvenile Fiction books of the year! It's got everything; fantastic science, super spies, and some not so super, a brush with the super natural, a loyal dog, and a riddle that is the key to everything. I can not keep this book on our shelves. One kid tells another about it and word of mouth suddenly has it flying out the door, faster than a speeding station wagon(time freeze headlights optional) More popular than "Wimpy Kid", and far better written than anything Lemony Snicket, our patrons can't wait for the next installment, but that's a whole 'nother story.

Possum Living How to Live Well Without A Job & With Almost No Money

This book is so popular in our library that I am adding a second copy. My patrons tell me that it is the single best demonstration of the disparity of want and need that they have ever seen. I wish that I could give a first hand review but the waiting list for this book is 5 patrons long, so it may be awhile before I get a turn.
