The Awakening: Monstress Vol. 1

"Holy ****."
That's exactly what I said after finishing the first issue of this dazzling comics series. Here's the description from Wikipedia: "The series is set in a matriarchal "alternate Asia" riven by war between the Arcanics, magical creatures who sometimes can pass for human, and the Cumea, an order of sorceresses who consume Arcanics to fuel their power. The main character, Maika Halfwolf, is an Arcanic who is set on learning more about, and avenging, her dead mother. According to Liu, among the series's themes are the inner strength required to withstand constant dehumanization, as well as the power of friendship among women."
And boy howdy, do the creators of this comic deliver. The protagonist is smart, proud, stubborn, hotheaded, rash, and very, very focused on vengeance. The writing and artwork are top-notch--as in, one of the top five comics I've ever read. Ever. Their world is beautifully fleshed out, both in word and picture. The way the characters act is true to their own internal logic, cruel and kind, violent and gentle at the same time. Be warned; there is very little sentimentality in this tale--much as in Dickens, the innocent are often made to bear the brunt of others' whims. But this story is so compelling--the creators do such a smashing job of introducing you to its baffling, complex, shifting realities, and they do it at their own pace, without page after page of exposition. I give

Criminal The Deluxe Edition
by
Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips

Do you like your crime fiction hard-boiled? Does it need to have a two-fisted antihero, crooked cops and hot but morally ambiguous dames? Then look no further than this, the "Criminal" Deluxe Edition! I saw a review of this comic in "Entertainment Weekly" and for once they were right on the money. Leo is a career criminal whose last job went horribly wrong. He escaped and now tries to keep a low profile, but he gets in on one last caper... Not the most original outline, I know, but I was immediately taken with Ed Brubaker's tense, terse style of writing. Sean Phillips' art, realistic and detailed without being fussy, complements Brubaker's script beautifully. This makes a great companion to Brian Azzurello's noir masterpiece, "100 Bullets". Please note that "Criminal" is NOT FOR KIDS: it contains bloody violence, sex and nudity and plenty of bad language.
