Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Carly's Voice: Breaking Through Autism
by
Arthur Fleischmann

This book is amazing! If you are already well versed in autism, you will enjoy reading about a family who went to extraordinary lengths to get their daughter the services and education she deserved! If you are not well versed in autism yet, this book is also a great starting point to learn more about the struggles of a child with autism, and the added strain on the family! I could not put this book down, and think anyone interested in autism from any perspective (speech-language pathology, psychology, behavioral, etc) will find this to be a great read!

Wool (Silo #1)

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever picked up. The story sucks you in from the very start and the world is so real that you completely absorbed into it. Then the bond begins with the characters, and the book just continues to get into your skin more and more, but in such an enjoyable way! Then the sad day comes when the book ends! However, do not fear, there is another series which is the prequels to this book to be read after! This book will stick with you well after you are finished, and leave you craving each next installment from this amazing author!

Mind of My Mind
by
Butler, Octavia E.

Another amazing book by Octavia Butler! I read Wild Seed and was just enthralled, and so sad when I came to the end of it, not because of content, but because I didn't want it to end! Luckily these books are part of a series called the Patternist, and I already had picked up Mind of My Mind, and the story didn't have to end with Wild Seed. I definitely suggest starting with Wild Seed, easily available here at Powell's, because it is the foundation of this world Octavia has written for us. This is speculative fiction at its best in my opinion, because it is not so unbelievable that you find yourself questioning everything, you accept it for the wonderful piece of fiction that it is!

Wild Seed

Octavia E Butler

I was only recently introduced to the writings of Octavia Butler, and thus began my mission to get my hands on any of her writing I could. This book is simply amazing, it is speculative fiction without being unbelievable, and the writing and story make it a really difficult book to put down! This is the first book in a series called the Patternist, that means if you love it half as much as I did, you will be elated to discover the story doesn't have to end with this book! You will want to pick up Mind of My Mind before you let yourself get too far through this book so that the amazing world Octavia Butler creates for us can continue to be explored delicious page after page.

Turn Right at Machu Picchu Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time
by
Mark Adams
Curtis Johnson
, August 15, 2012
This is a very enjoyable travelogue/adventure/history type book in which our inept outdoorsman author decides to set out and follow the historical Peruvian trail of Hiram Bingham III. Adams follows Bingham's route that led to the "discovery" of the now world renowned Machu Picchu site. I love how the book alternates chapters to what Bingham did with chapters about the authors experience along the same trail. You certainly feel like you are trekking right along with Adams in this adventure to reach the once hidden city. Anyone interested in this genre should definitely pick this one up!

Zoo City
by
Lauren Beukes
Curtis Johnson

Lauren Beukes invites us into a fantastical city in South Africa, with a cast of of amazing characters that leave you enthralled from the very start. It is definitely a unique Science Fiction/Fantasy book, which doesn't follow the same old 'been there done that' themes that occasionally plague the genre. It is something fresh, new, and exciting. I had things I needed to do the day I started to read this book, but they didn't get done because I just couldn't put it down. This story is definitely one you don't want to miss!

Railsea
by
China Mieville
Curtis Johnson
, August 03, 2012
China Mieville slowly shares another one of his fantastical worlds with us. The story flows smoothly and takes all across the railsea, that is the only way people can travel between the outpost towns and cities based upon rock mountains and hills, in a post-apocalyptic dystopian setting. While the book is considered "Young Adult Science-Fiction", I would say that it is more "For All Ages Science-Fiction". Told from the perspective of a narrator, you just sit back and have the story told to you, and enjoy every minute of it!

Redwood & Wildfire
by
Andrea Hairston
Curtis Johnson
, August 03, 2012
Andrea Hairston brings us a book that you will not be able to put down. The Science Fiction aspect is not quite what one expects and is more centered in hoodoo and voodoo that is certainly more of a belief for many than Science Fiction. Hairston's amazing character development and storytelling gives you vested interest in what is going to happen with each turn of the page. An amazing book, you are certainly missing out if you do not give this one a read!

Burning Rage Of A Dying Planet
by
Rosebraugh, Craig

This book is amazing! I rarely find a book that I sit down with, and just cannot tear myself away from. If you are interested in revolutionary environmentalism, this book will have you hooked! It was like watching an action thriller movie, at times I was at the edge of my seat, or my gut tensed up with compassion and empathy for the situations the author would end up in! I really never leave reviews, but this book definitely deserves it! Also if you are a local Portland resident you will love that most of the activity takes place in Portland, while some of the events are unfortunate, nothing makes it easier to visualize the scenes than being a pdx'er! Do yourself a favor, and just buy a copy, you won't regret it unless you hate mother nature and want to see more corporate crimes against her.
