Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Story of Earth The First 4.5 Billion Years from Stardust to Living Planet
by
Robert M Hazen
MarkBUF
, January 18, 2013
If you have an interest in any type of Earth science, you will love this book. We have all heard about the evolution of plant and animal life on Earth. But what about the evolution of not only rocks but even of the various kinds of molecules within the rocks? Those first three billion years which we have been led to believe were a very long, very boring time, Hazen turns it into a fascinating journey of discovery. And he has been involved in the research which developed this new understanding of early Earth so he gives a more detailed picture than usual of how this inquiry was conducted.

Routine Data Processing in Earthquake Seismology: With Sample Data, Exercises and Software
by
Jens Havskov and Lars Ottemoller
MarkBUF
, January 22, 2011
This is a book with a very limited target audience, but for those of us who are interested, this is a great addition to the literature on how to run a seismograph station. Havskov is a well-respected, practicing seismologist who writes well, that is, clearly and to the point, especially for a non-native speaker. If you have ever wondered how modern seismology uses current computer technology -- and you have the patience to read such technical material -- this is the book. If you are more interested in how to set up a seismograph station in the first place, see Havskov's previous book: Instrumentation In Earthquake Seismology.
