Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Gone Girl
by
Gillian Flynn

I'm such a Gillian Flynn fan that I am constantly going to her website and praying that she is writing a new book. Dark Places and Sharp Objects were both fantastic and you have time to read both of those before Gone Girl comes out in June. This is the story of Nick and Amy Dunne, a couple who were once very in love and now have grown very far apart. They lose their journalism jobs in New York City and are forced to move back to Nick's hometown in Missouri to take care of his ailing parents. Let's just say it doesn't exactly work out as planned. I would love to tell you more but I don't want to write any spoilers. This is the best book I've read so far this year and I will be recommending it (and her two previous books) to everyone I talk to.

I knew that I would like this book because I loved The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Brian Selznick's book about Harry Houdini. I didn't expect to be blown away, but I was. Not only is Brian Selznick a terrific artist but he genuinely tells a story in this book spanning generations that is so heartfelt. I loved the book. I was so sad to turn the last pages because I didn't want it to end. I cannot wait for Brian Selznick's next book.

Miracle Life of Edgar Mint
by
Brady Udall

I chose this book for my book club because I had read THE LONELY POLYGAMIST by Brady Udall and loved the author's style of writing. THE MIRACLE LIFE OF EDGAR MINT does not disappoint. A friend who had read the book warned me that the first half of the book was dark but not to give up. There are many bad things that happen to Edgar but ultimately he finds his place in the world. I believe that my book club will probably spend most of our meeting discussing Dr. Barry Pinkley, which is a character in the book unlike any other character I've ever read. I laughed out loud many times in this book and when I finished I had a huge smile on my face. I'm recommending this book to everyone I know.

Room

This was the best book I read in 2010. I could hear Jack's voice in my head during the day and when I would go to bed at night. A truly terrifying set of circumstances and a wonderfully written book. I can't wait to read more Emma Donoghue.
