Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Committed

I have been married 36 years - happily. Nevertheless, I found this book enriching, eye-opening and inspiring! I loved Eat, Pray, Love and this continuation of her story is wonderful. Having reluctantly made the commitment to marry (read why in the book!) she decides to go in eyes wide open. Her researches take her far and wide, and there is no subject matter having to do with marriage that Elizabeth Gilbert doesn't talk about. Please, check it out from your library, or better yet, buy it here at Powell's! I did!

Jennifer is a remarkable woman, with a remarkable vision. I own all of her books, and find her enriching, motivating and encouraging. There are 52 sections, one for each week of the year, and there are great prompts for writing, setting your priorities and exploring what your soul seeks. Highly recommended for women from newlyweds to the retired!

Finding the Deep River Within A Womans Guide to Recovering Balance & Meaning in Everyday Life
by
Abby Seixas
Laura Hulka
, October 04, 2010
Reading this book over a period of two months, taking time to absorb the lessons and meditate on Abby Seixas' message, I found myself enriched in ways beyond what I expected. As she presents her ideas and materials, Seixas gives solid, concrete ways to recover balance and meaning, just as the subtitle to the book states. Her methodology is sound, and her technique is based on years as a psychotherapist, specializing in issues of life balance. I found the exercises both helpful and intriguing, since they are not the typical psychobabble one often hears in self-help types of books. Instead, she teaches you methods of reaching within yourself (to that "Deep River") and drawing on your strengths and your joys to become who you long to be. Seixas doesn't preach. She doesn't tell you how wrong your beliefs are. She simply opens the door for your own discoveries, and in doing so, provides a path that may lead you to where you actually want to go, not where society, your family, friends or co-workers think you should be!

An Extraordinary Year of Ordinary Days
by
Susan Wittig Albert
Laura Hulka
, October 04, 2010
The prolific Ms. Albert has done it again! A book of intense reading pleasure, Susan's stories about her life in 2008 resonated with me. She is very concerned with the environment, with creating an authentic life, and with reaching out to our potential. Highly recommended, especially for women who want to sample a journal on a very personal basis; there are some great ideas here!

Darling Dahlias & the Cucumber Tree
by
Susan Wittig Albert
Laura Hulka
, July 28, 2010
Charming, whimsical and full of mystery, this is the first book in a new series by the prolific and always readable Susan Wittig Albert. It is the great depression, and Darling, Alabama is struggling, along with the rest of the country. But the indomitable women of the Darling Dahlia Garden Club are enjoying their legacy - a new clubhouse and gardens they inherited from one of the founders of the group. I deliberately took time to google pictures of both the "cucumber tree" (a form of magnolia, related to the tulip tree) and "Dahlias," so I could picture what the plants looked like. The characters are fabulous, and the setting folksy and down-home. Great recipes too!

14 Steps to Awaken the Sacred Feminine Women in the Circle of Mary Magdalene
by
Joan Norton
Laura Hulka
, July 08, 2010
A great book for group leaders, this book gives you the necessary path to study, understand and appreciate the Sacred feminine as Mary Magdalene might have shown us. Both authors are dynamic and powerful spiritual feminists, and their ideas and methods have encouraged me to once again search out ways to incorporate the Sacred Feminine into my life.
