Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Fourth of July Creek

Fantastic book. I kept reading about Fourth of July Creek before it came out and eagerly bought a copy when it became available. The chatter was not hype or hyperbole. This is a terrific book; good story, great character development, researched nuances throughout, and no wasted words...everything works here. Fourth of July Creek is one of those rare books that, when you recommend it to a friend, you have no doubt they will love it.

Wave
by
Sonali Deraniyagala
Laney F
, December 24, 2013
I just finished reading this remarkable memoir. I kept waiting for the happy ending, which I knew, and which Sonali Deraniyagala kept reminding the reader, was not to come. It is an extraordinary book of unimaginable grief and pain, and how the author is still trying to deal with her loss. Ms. Deraniyagala holds nothing back in relating the process she went through for years after losing her entire, immediate family to the "wave." It is a moving piece, in which she explains her very personal process of healing - if one can call it that - or at least one person's way of coping and carrying on...for ever after.

The Son
by
Meyer, Philip
Laney F
, August 07, 2013
The Son is, flat-out, the most incredible book to be written about Texas in a long time. The well-written, easy-to-follow story covers over 100 years of a family's history, from the latter 1800s, when Comanches still lived free in West Texas, through modern oil-centric Houston. Meyer obviously meticulously researched all aspects of Texas history and the peoples involved, but does not let these details detract from this splendid book. Comparisons have been made between him and other famous writers, but I disagree; Meyer has a unique voice which is rich, strong, most entertaining, and should not be missed.

Liars Club A Memoir
by
Mary Karr
Laney F
, June 07, 2013
I'm not sure how I found out about Mary Karr, but I am so glad I did. The Liar's Club is a wonderful memoir; the book is funny, touching, and - at times - a bit shocking. Being from the same neck of the woods as the author...and about the same age, I especially loved the way Ms. Karr painted such a realistic portrait of life in a Texas working-class area during the 60's. The speech patterns, expressions, and descriptors were all delightful. Although from the Southwest, Mary Karr's book is reminiscent of the fine examples of Southern writing.

Steve Jobs
by
Walter Isaacson
Laney F
, January 05, 2013
This book is amazing; it is not your typical stogy 'business' book. It is a book of fascinating insight into a most fascinating human being - one who thought "different." Isaacson 's writing is clear and riveting. A true page turner on par with anything written by PD James, Carl Hiaasen, or any fiction writer out there...but it's real.
